Question about the Saphire Theme

    I have given up Blix and have my heart set on Saphire now. The sidebar only appears on the home page though. I’ve searched the forum and there isn’t my particular question so here goes.

    When a person pays for a CSS upgrade, does it allow them to make a change like having the sidebar show on every click, or does the upgrade only allow for playing with colors? Also, is there a possibility that the WP team would consider altering the theme that way since most people want their sidebar to show up on more than the home page since it affects click-throughs. I know I could just send feeback, but if one of the forum volunteers already knows the answer to that question, asking it here will save the WP folks from another mail to answer, thus having that few minutes to deal with someone else’s more technical problem.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi, fracas. You seem to be stuck with me. I have the CSS upgrade and I can tell you that it only allows changes to the “look and feel” of a theme, not the functionality.

    Changes to the underlying theme, I would imagine, would require the consent and work of the theme designer, so that brings us to the “send feedback” point.

    Probably not the response you were hoping for.

    @fracas
    I’m virtually certain that changing the theme to display widgets on the other pages would require access to the underlying theme files and since we do not have access to those on this multi-user platform, you are probably looking at either living with it the way it is, or choosing another themes. Sorry to not have better news for you.

    Blame Kubrick. Because the default theme removes sidebars from archive pages, many theme authors thought this must be best practice and followed suit without, I suspect, really thinking it through.

    If you had the CSS upgrade you could get Sandbox to look reasonably Sapphire-ish, though if the only thing you want to change is the sidebars it’s probably not worth the effort.

    Thanks everyone. I did think I’d get this answer so not a big surprise. I’m going to think on it a bit. I did think I could add something to a custom header to remind users to click for the sidebar stuff. I might just try it out for a while and see if click-throughs really suffer enough to warrant huge concern. I’m also going to go have a serious look at Sandbox, so thanks to wank for that idea.
