Question about word press dashboard and internet links…
-
I’m sorry if this question has been asked several times before, but my glasses are out of date and my new pair hasn’t arrived. This is evidenced in my very first post to the forums page that I didn’t take the time to read before my debut… For which I am terribly sorry, but the original and most common link to dns is now a filter that won’t let you pass.
My trouble is likely the same trouble posted in many other articles, which I’m sorry I missed, but could someone tell me why it takes several hours to connect to the dashboard after login? It seems that the time lapse between original login and actual connection to the dashboard feature is getting longer and longer?
I am enjoying my blog, so I don’t have any real complaints; unless you have read my blog, however the complaints are unrelated to functions of wordpress.
Another question unrelated to the dashboard: I have a few sites that I really love, and while they are not related to business, nor advertising, are we allowed to share them within our blogs? I don’t want to get into trouble, as evidenced in my first post to the forums using a link that got edited; sorry…

I’m hoping that you’re going to tell us more about your connection, your setup and provide specifics. Unless you can tell me what book I’m holding up in front of the monitor right now. :)
I have some guesses off the top of my head but without knowing more, they’re just guesses.

When I sign in to WordPress I am instaneously connected to my blogs and to my dashboard(s).
I have a high speed internet connection.
I have a router.
My operating system is windows xp (firewall off).
Norton internet security (firewall on).
Firefox browser. -
BD is coming in via AOL. My money is on that he’s coming in via their royally mucked up proxy which changes IP addresses on their clients at random but, without knowing more, I can’t positive that that is the issue. It probably waiting for BD to get back to the IP address that he or she used to sign on with.
*chuckle*
For example, I see 9 different folks posting from BD’s IP address over time.

Ok, you got me… Sorry for not providing my connection, OS, and ISP specifics.
I’m using Broadband.
AOL and alternatively IE when AOL fails.
Windows xp…(firewall off)
Mcafee…(firewall on)
Do any of the above mentioned present complications in connection to my dashboard?
And to resolve the he/she BD riddle… :oP

I’m voting for the random IP issue. I did send in a feedback though to see if staff has any other ideas.

That might be the case, but I am not using AOL to connect, I’m using Verizon Broadband.
Even when I don’t connect to the internet by accessing AOL, and use IE instead (while AOL is shut down) I still have the same problem…
Thanks DrMike…

Is it the same connection that you’re using now? If so, it’s an AOL IP address underneith an AOL proxy and router.
You’ll discover that ISPs lease out connections to one another.

Exactly… I am using my AOL service at the moment. I closed it down, however, and just used IE instead to see if there was any difference. Unfortunately, there was no difference.
So, I gather AOL is not wordpress friendly… I’m going to download Firefox, there might be a difference while accessing wordpress, a more happy, friendly, difference that won’t make me bald or plagued with ulcers.
I’ll report back if the download resolves this unpleasent issue.
Thanks,

It’s not the software, it’s who owns the connection you’re making and how they have it setup.
Every software I’ve come across has has the issue. phpBB, phpNuke, etc. For security, you match up a login via the IP address that created the connection request. If you relax that feature, you open up anyone in the IP block to make a login.
There are ways around it but, again, it’s a matter of how much of a risk you’re willing to take.

I understand that, servers and login’s are specific. My question would then be to force the user to reenter the password when the IP is changed, as we all know that ISP’s are typically the same for most home users; unless they are logged into a fixed server such as the library.
I moderate a message board somewhere on the net (site address withheald) and it’s typical to see the internet service providers IP, and added to that I can also see a fixed servers IP information as well; something most homeusers don’t have. For example, someone logged into AOL on a work server such as usps.org. I have the option to see both, or I can run a decimal IP search to locate a dedicated server’s information; if there is one.
Sorry, my head hurts now, but I’ll be back with a firefox update soon…
