Question about WP-content folder

  • Unknown's avatar

I designed my new website on WordPress.com and now I’m going to migrate it to another site for hosting.

Please, how do I get access to my WP-content folder so I can download it to my computer?

    Thank you for your help.

    Hello,
I did a little research and there is this wonderful resource that shows you how to move from WordPress.com to a self-hosted install.
    https://move.wordpress.com/

They basically recommend exporting then importing the content to the new site.

There is a similar article here
    http://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-properly-move-your-blog-from-wordpress-com-to-wordpress-org/

I hope this helps, it differs from doing the migration with the entire contents folder but it seems to be the fail safe way to do it.

Thank you solybarr! I read all the articles you linked above and the directions seem pretty clear. I will give it a try and let you know that it worked out, or that I might need more help…I think this will work! Cheers!

Hi Solybarr, thanks again for your help. I have had about 75% success migrating my content over from WordPress.com to WordPress.org – and of course, I would like 100% success….so please, I could use some more assistance.
Some of the photos in our media file came over, but not nearly all of them. Also the formatting of most of our webpages came over correctly, but the Photos page format did not migrate. There was also a section of the Home page that did not come over.

I have some other questions too, but I will wait to ask for help with those until I can solve these first issues. Please let me know if you have any further info for me or if you can contact a moderator who can walk me through the necessary steps.

    Thank you!
    Robert

thanks for stepping up to help me solybarr!

  • Hi there,

I’m afraid there’s not anything we can do if all your media didn’t transfer over to a site hosted somewhere else. If it happened while importing to WordPress.com we can usually fetch the missing images to pull them in, but we have no access to the importer on a site hosted elsewhere to do the same for you there.

The only suggestion I can make is to try running the importer again. Otherwise, you can ask in the self-hosted WordPress forums if the users there have any suggestions. Self-hosted WordPress work differently from WordPress.com in many regards, and the user in that forum have more knowledge concerning issues specifically with the self-hosted version:
