question for mods/HEs
-
Is it helpful to mark posts that are clearly spam with “modlook” so they can be removed?
-
Sure. That’s a good way to grab our attention on them. If there are a FLOOD of similar spam (as sometimes happens), we may ask you to stop while we see if there is a way to block them on the back end.

ok, great. I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t misusing the tag.
I wonder if it might be better actually to tag them simply as spam. Then you guys can check #spam every once in awhile and delete them.
Somehow this forum doesn’t seem to be overrun with much spam. You guys must already be doing a good job keeping up on that.

The modlook tag is more helpful right now than a “spam’ tag. Though you are welcome to use both.

spam comes in waves, the filters here are getting better, but I have seen as many as 80% spam on the first page some times

There has been a vast improvement over the course of these last 9 years. I use the report site link on the sites so Terms of Service Staff gets a heads up when we get spammers who have empty blogs but keep spamming the support forums. I do not mark every spam thread with modlook. Staff time is better spent on providing support than on closing threads IMO. -
Modlooking spam threads isn’t crucial by any means. But it also takes very little staff time to deal with them if they are.
So it is really up to the individual doing it if they want to take the time.

In addition to the filters, zapping the spam quickly I think discourages the professional spammers.
The spam comments on my site is way down this year over last year – peak month last year was about 60,000 spam – Akismet did fairly good but still left me 200 or so each day that month – maybe that not much got through sent the professionals somewhere else
