Question re sponsored posts.

    Hi,
    I use my wordpress blog with both static pages that serve as a website platform for my fine art photography, and also as a blog where I share my street photography, projects, recipes and journals about outings and photowalks I take around town.

    I have never done a sponsored post before as I have never been contacted about anything even remotely relevant to me and I don’t have a media kit in place as I don’t really consider myself a blogger. I usually only blog about things I really enjoyed that I paid for myself, such as when I have previously attended a concert or met a celebrity I admired. So me blogging about an event is not out of the ordinary.

    I have just been contacted by a media and promotions company offering tickets to a theatre show in my town that I’d really like to see. It’s not a show that I could afford to pay for myself.

    Anyway the point of my post is before I rsvp for tickets, which I would love to do, am I going to run into any problems from wordpress if I go ahead and blog about this show, having received free tickets to it?
    If the answer is yes and it may violate terms, I won’t do it. I just wanted to check.

    Thanks for your advice.

    Sponsored posts are banned here. It is, however, not clear if simply enabling you to attend an event counts as sponsorship (if they send a limo to get you, it does). I’ll flag this for a staff response.

    I get such offers over and over for both blogs for years on end and I send every one to the Trash. That said, you will want to read these support docs as content published for the primary purpose of driving traffic to other websites is not allowed.

    What I will do is tag this thread for a definite response from Staff because Volunteers don’t make such calls and I don’t want any new Volunteers top be confused about that. Please subscribe to this thread so you are notified when they respond.

    @raincoaster
    Yo! You surprised me. Simultaneous typing.

    Thank you both. I was quite surprised to receive the offer, however I suppose they liked my style of writing. Sponsored posts are not an avenue I’d be pursuing as (terms aside) they don’t feel genuine. This is something I would like to attend though.

    I did Google this first and it pointed me to something saying that sponsored posts are allowed but 3rd party advertising is not (so I couldn’t use any of their official images). The extent of the sponsorship is 2 free tickets.

    I really appreciate the quick response and look forward to an official reply. I certainly don’t want to put my site at risk by doing the wrong thing.

    Any kind of post that requires you to link to any site that sponsored anything is advertising plain and simple.

    I’m not so sure. I’ve seen staff rule it was fine. I mean, it’s fine to accept a free book in exchange for a review. So I’m leaving this for staff.

  • Sure, that would be perfectly fine, as long as they don’t want to drop a giant banner ad into the post, since the no-advertisement rules still apply.
