Question regarding censorship

Well, after I´ve accidently posted this question on wordpress.org I will ask it on the right place this time. Here.

I´ve run a blog dealing with political stuff in my homecountry but I recently got issued by people who had different beliefs and sued me to court.

Which law is relevant for the stuff I publish? The law which applies in California? Or that of my homecountry? And does wp censor sites which are perfectly legal under californian law but borderlining in their homecountry?

Thanks in advance and best regards.

As the terms of service agreement indicates, US law is what governs WordPress blogs. This is a double-edged sword in many cases, but it’s useful to know. If someone wants to issue a takedown notice regarding your blog, the will have to do it in US court. Then can, of course, go after your internet access in the country you live; that’s a completely different issue.

“And does wp censor sites which are perfectly legal under californian law but borderlining in their homecountry?”

    I wouldn’t no.
There are blogs written here by people who live in China – and their govt would not like that to happen.

If you have problems, they will not come from here but from outside our domain.

And politics? Without opposition and discussion it isn’t politics.

    Get a blog :)

7th censorship thread in the last week.

I’m wondering what brought this up all of the sudden.

  • Unknown's avatar

Me too. There was also a minor pattern of folks posting the same questions on both the wordpress.com and wordpress.org foums at the same time. Whenever we get a run over here I check it out over there and there is often a co-relation between the two.

Didn’t China change their settings again recently? (and what about all the opt-in/email notification threads all of a sudden too; was this on Digg or sumpin’?)

  • Unknown's avatar

China – Not that I’m aware of. (I have 3 clients from Hong Kong and I don’t see any issues in my overflowing inbox)

  • Unknown's avatar

Yup, you remember correctly although I can’t remember where I read the China bit right now. And the rash of opt-in/email notification questions as well as the censorship and copyright questions was something I noticed too.
Aside from that what we basically have going on now is two streams. Folks coming form wordpress.org and expecting the same features they have on a wordpress.org blog. Folks from wordpress.com who find themes, plug-ins, etc. that are available to wordpress.org self hosting or web hosted bloggers and wanting them here. Remarkably few actually read the “please read me first before posting” pink sticky at the head of the forum.

    raincoaster —

It’s the recent Newt Gingrich speech that is causing this caution and fear.

He was being provocative and suggesting that we must shut down freedom of speech in America to stop terrorists from using blogs and internet communication and such to spread fear and death:

The reverberations of his threats against our freedoms have been banging around the blogworld — including my own — ever since, so it makes sense people are coming here to wonder what they can and cannot say in light of that new fear against speaking the truth.

Uhhh… Guess happened to me as well… One of my articles was, suddently, gone.

    drmike,
The internet is not censored in Hong Kong – the “Great Firewall” starts the other side of the HK border.

  • Unknown's avatar

That’s an interesting piece of info, given that HK is part of China now, officially. Still, all interesting.

*shrug* I have evidence and experience that says otherwise.

Political policies are beyond the scope of this forum though.
