Question regarding formatting in post

I’m trying to put a poem into one of my blog posts, but can’t get the formatting right. I’ve tried pasting from Word, pasting as plain text, etc, but the carriage returns are always hard returns (puts more space between lines) and I can’t get the stanza breaks. How do I change the formatting? Even when I look under the HTML tab, there’s no code to change.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

So, pressing Enter once should get your a full paragraph break (one empty line) and pressing Shift + Enter should get you a single line break. Anything more than that will get collapsed by the WordPress.com editor (it’s strict with collapsing space).

Pasting from Word is usually less reliable because of how the underlying code from Word doesn’t always work well with code on pre-existing websites.

Are you trying to get more than one line break between stanzas?

How long is the poem — will it fit on one screen?
I would (and frequently do) copy it into Word and format it just they way I like,
then make it into an image file and put that into the blog.
If it won’t fit, tell readers to click on the image to enlarge.

Do you know about jingproject.com — where you can download Jing?
Jing is a great free program that lets you screen-print to an image file,
then save that either to your own computer or to free host space online.
I use it almost every day — I have no connection with the vendor other than
as a happy customer of that and another paid-for program, Snag-It.

Here is an article with more details and devices to add space between lines:

Also note that Panos has a list of other posts about formating text in his left sidebar.

The problem with posting poetry as an image is that search bots cannot “read” it. Even supplying ALT tag and Description will not provide the kind of Google juice that not using an image and posting it directly into a blog post will provide. As Tess said above there are other posts on formatting that are helpful. The OP mentions spacing between stanzas is a problem.
