question regarding need to do html coding

  I have read that it will be necessary to do some coding with a WordPress-created site. Is this true, for a fairly simple site?

  Not necessarily. Whether code is required might depend upon the theme used and the types of content used to build the site. On some themes it may be necessary to do a little coding to replicate the homepage, or some other feature, of the corresponding theme demo. Inserting images or links into text widgets requires basic HTML code.
