    Howdy!

Let’s see if I can answer all of these. But if not, let us all know which ones you need more clarification on and we can all help further :)

    1. How do I get social media icons to display on my site?

These article here covers your options for adding them here via a text widget:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/add-social-media-buttons-to-your-sidebar-or-footer/

    Or via a menu:

    Create a Social Links Menu

But you might look at the options for the theme you use and see if they have them built in.

    2. When you use the tlk.io chat widget and your chatting with people and if they send unwanted or inappropriate content (messages pictures etc) is there a way to like ban them from the chat?

Looks like that widget’s creators do allow for a user to become a moderator but it’s unclear from their site if you can censor messages or remove users.
    http://blog.tlk.io/post/105771925713/how-to-become-a-moderator

Though messages do get deleted after 10 minutes automatically unless a moderator saves a chat history:
    http://blog.tlk.io/post/102180039173/how-to-keep-chat-history

And according to their site, they do have “User Muting” options.

Sorry I can’t be more specific, so you might want ask their Twitter for a full answer.

    3. How can people find your blog once it goes public?

This one is a bit harder since that delves into SEO. But the first step there would indeed be to set your site to Public via your dashboard.

You’ll find these options under Settings -> General -> Privacy in your WordPress account dashboard for the site in question:

    https://wordpress.com/settings/general/ibstayfly.wordpress.com

From there it’s a matter of Google’s (and other search engine’s) bots/spiders crawling your site and adding it to it’s index. But be aware that i can take a few weeks or even a few months before your domain is added to their system.

    4. Is there a way to save my entire site to an email flashdrive etc if God for bid I loose my entire site I have it saved somewhere else?

There isn’t a way to fully backup files and your site automatically from your end with a WordPress.com account. But WordPress.com does backup your sites from their end and if you do need access to them, you can reach out to their support team to get them.

    Export Your Website’s Content

As a precaution though, you can periodically export your site and save it as a file locally using the export tool as described in the above article

    5. Is there a way to copyright and protect my content such as my blogs pages etc from being used or shared somewhere else without my permission?

No action is technically needed to copyright your creations. You technically own the copyright of that content as soon as you create it:
    http://www.copyright.co.nz/Copyright/Rules/

But it wouldn’t hurt putting a copyright symbol and your name or company in the footer of your site which is what most people do. (e.g. ©koolbeanz247)

As far as it being used somewhere else, it’s unfortunately impossible from preventing someone from manually copying your text and images if that content is posted publicly on the web. There are ways to prevent hotlinking and ways to discourage people like preventing right clicking) (neither of which are supported on WordPress.com) but there is no sure fire way of doing it without making your site private really.

If someone does end up copying your content, there are ways to file requests to have them take down that content like a DMCA claim, but we wouldn’t be able to directly assist with that. Here are some articles on that though :)

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/copyright-infringement-what-to-do/
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/copyright-and-the-dmca/

Hope this covers most of it, but again, let everyone know in this topic if that doesn’t do the trick.

    Best,

    Richard

Ok thank you. Just one more question

Is there a way to make fonts on WordPress bigger?

And also it’s not possible to change the login url for WordPress.com sites right? But my site is secure as long as I have a strong password right?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello again,

In a lot of cases, font size can be edited via the theme or through css/html. Your site appears to be private so it’s not easily viewable to see your specific settings.

A general overview of fonts/display/customization can be seen here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/

If you’re also familiar with html/css, we have the following:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/advanced-html/
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/editing-css/
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-css/

The login url question is correct, and we do have some additional thoughts to add for you password strength:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/selecting-a-strong-password/

I hope this covers your questions but otherwise we’re here to help if you have any more!

    Hi there,

And also it’s not possible to change the login url for WordPress.com sites right? But my site is secure as long as I have a strong password right?

If you are referring to the name you use to login (username) you can follow the steps in this video to have it changed.
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/change-your-username/

Having a strong password is always a good idea and keeps the site secure. In addition to a strong password, you may also want to consider adding two step authentication.

    Hope this helps!

    Hi again koolbeanz247,

In regards to changing the login URL, I’m assuming that you mean the wp-login (e.g. domain.com/wp-login.php and/or /wp-admin) if so, that would not be possible on a WordPress.com account. Changing that URL path usually requires a 3rd party theme or plugin to execute which are not able to be added.

No worries though, changing the login URL isn’t a great solution in most all cases when you’re looking to beef up security.

As far as logins are concerned, strong passwords are extremely encouraged and avoiding usernames like admin, test, dev etc. is good too.

Additionally, WordPress.com’s Security settings being enabled, specifically the “Prevent brute force login attacks” option, is a safe bet as well which can be found under Settings -> Security in your WordPress.com Dashboard (e.g. https://wordpress.com/settings/security/domain.com).

Beyond that, there are plenty of security plugins out there to beef up security even more, but that would require a Business plan or above to install them.

Let us know if this clarifies this for you. Otherwise feel free to mark this topic as resolved and post new topics for any future questions you may have.

    Best,
    Richard

  • Hey koolbeanz247, sounds like everyone above has got you covered with answers to your questions. I hope you are enjoying WordPress so far!

I wanted to add a little more advice in response to your third question:

How can people find your blog once it goes public?

There’s SO much you can do to market your blog! You can:

    • Tag your posts
    • Get involved with the WordPress blogging community
    • Share on social media
    • Write guests posts for other blogs

    …and so much more!

WordPress has created a fantastic ebook about growing your blog’s audience. You can download that here:

Ebook: Grow Your Traffic, Build Your Blog

Best of luck on this new venture!

Thank you everyone for your help. It really did clarify. The only thing I’m confused with is question number 4.

How is it not possible to back up my entire site to an email or flashdrive from my end but WordPress.com can do it from there end? The reason is I would rather feel more safe with my site saved and backed up somewhere else if God for bid I loose my entire site?

  • Unknown's avatar

And also for the talk.io widget if I don’t want anonymous people joining the chat I know there’s a way to disable it but when I login to mine I don’t see where I can disable it?

  • Unknown's avatar

And lastly is there a way to get a news widget to display current news current events etc on my site? When I go widgets I don’t see a widget like that?

  • Unknown's avatar

Last question. When you post images on your site and if the image doesn’t show does that mean it’s copyrighted? Sometimes that happens to me? But I always put the link to where I got the image from underneath it? Does that help?

  • Unknown's avatar

Very last question. I wanted to create a portfolio for my site but I want to make it a separate menu but I’m having a hard time doing so? And also I want it to display as like a gallery slideshow kinda thing. But I don’t know how to do that?

  • Unknown's avatar

When my post is clicked on you can edit it. How do I prevent this please?

  • Unknown's avatar

hello there I have a question about exporting my blog from wordpress.com it says the they’ll will send a link on my email when its ready but it has been more than 10 hours I haven’t received any. is that normal??

    @1batan & @lexieanimetravel,

We kindly request that you not post into unrelated threads created by other users. You may start your own threads at this link: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/?new=1

@koolbeanz247 I am going to look at your follow-ups now, to see if I am able to assist.

  • Hi koolbeanz247,

Let’s see if I can help you out here!

How is it not possible to back up my entire site to an email or flashdrive from my end but WordPress.com can do it from there end?

You can indeed back up your posts, pages, comments, categories, and tags for your site by following the instructions in this article:

    Export Your Website’s Content

Is there anything else you would like to be able to back up?

talk.io widget if I don’t want anonymous people joining the chat

You can do this from your tlk.io account by following these steps:
    1. Go to https://tlk.io/YOURCHATNAME
    2. Click on the chat settings button (speech bubble) in the top right
    3. Click on the “Allow anonymous” to disable this setting

is there a way to get a news widget to display current news current events etc on my site?

You can achieve this through the RSS widget. Once you add the RSS widget to your site, you can insert a feed from whatever news source you’d like to display. For example, inserting the URL http://rss.cnn.com/rss/edition.rss will display the Top Stories from CNN.

When you post images on your site and if the image doesn’t show does that mean it’s copyrighted?

If you are uploading images with the correct file type (jpg, png, gif) and under 1GB, they should appear. Here’s an article which may help with your image display issue:

    Troubleshooting Image Uploads

It’s important to always make sure you’re adhering to the images copyright rules, and providing proper attribution to other people’s work. If you’re looking for ways to find free images, check out this article which may help:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/add-media/finding-free-images-and-other-media/

I wanted to create a portfolio for my site but I want to make it a separate menu but I’m having a hard time doing so?

I recommend you start off with our support resource on menus here:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/

If you get stuck at any point, do not hesitate to let us know how far you got with the menu setup, and what you’re trying to achieve.

I hope this has been helpful. Best of luck with your site!

Awesome. Thanks, staff-brock. Looks like you are in good hands, @koolbeanz247.

  • Unknown's avatar

Ok thank you. Just one more question

    1. When I go to talk.io and click on the chat settings bubble I don’t see an option to disable anonymous setting?

    2. And also when you post images from the internet and if there copyrighted does putting the link underneath it help?

  • Unknown's avatar

When I add the rss widget it says the feed is down? Also what’s the difference between rss and rss links?

And also is it possible to add more than 1 url for the rss widget?

  • Unknown's avatar

And also I want to add a portfolio to my site but I want it as a separate menu separate from the pages menu? I tried but I’m still having a hard time doing so?
