Questions about Business Plan, Site transfer and Domain Transfer

I am running a friend’s ecommerce website with a different hosting company, and we are fed up with their incompetence and inability to answer simple technical questions.. We are looking at buying a Business Hosting Plan with wordpress.com, but I have some questions before we sign on the dotted line.

CRUCIAL: The active website is an ecommerce platform that delivers digital downloadable products. Our current host cannot handle the bandwidth of some of these downloadable products that can be anywhere from 28mb – 3gb in file size. Would be be able to store these on our website, and would a Business Plan be able to handle PHP file downloads at that size?

IMPORTANT: Our current website has been custom designed and we wish to keep the look and feel of how the site is without having to start al over and rebuild it. What do you offer in Site Transfer services?

IMPORTANT: Our domain is currently registered with our current hosting company, and we would like to keep the site and domain under the same roof. What do you offer in Domain Transfer services?

    WP.com: Unknown
    Jetpack: Yes
    Correct account: Unknown

  • Howdy –

Thanks for getting in touch. These are great questions. Let’s go through them below.

The active website is an ecommerce platform that delivers digital downloadable products

Yes, you would be set up on WooCommerce as the ecommerce solution with the business plan, and you can sell digital products. No issues.

Our current host cannot handle the bandwidth of some of these downloadable products that can be anywhere from 28mb – 3gb in file size.

The business plan comes with 200gb or storage space. Y’all should be able to make that work based on those file sizes.

Business Plan be able to handle PHP file downloads at that size?

Can you tell me more about how that currently works? I don’t think I understand how this is different from the other digital products that you are selling.

What do you offer in Domain Transfer services?

I agree, keeping things in one space just makes life easier. The domain can be transferred as part of your hosting plan by following these steps:
    https://wordpress.com/support/domain-connection-vs-domain-transfer/

If the domain is not 60 days old yet, then it can’t be transferred at this time and you would instead, connect it through mapping. That’s an internet-wide standard that we don’t have any control over.

One more note from my end is that you’ll want to wait and connect the domain once the new site is ready to go. This will limit down time and have the least impact possible on revenue for y’all.

Write back with more questions. Once the plan is added to your account you’re going to get re routed to live chat and email support. That will be a more timely option for y’all since the forums are asynchronous.

We are currently using WooCommerce to deliver the downloadable products to our customers. Those downloadable products are currently stored on the website, and after a product has been purchased, the customer is given a secure download link to acquire the product they purchased.

With our current host, we are on a shared server, and the bandwidth simply cannot handle the download through PHP. We have asked if there are other options available (I have had several conversations with the WooCommerce development team on how to resolve our issue of customers not being able to download the products they have purchased. The user will click the download button and after 30-45 seconds, the download will timeout, and result in a Download Failed – Network Error).

We want to make 100% sure that if we migrate our site to a WordPress Business solution, we will not have this same issue.

  • Hi @adminwhp, we’re known for our uptime and performance. We have many business / eCommerce users who sell digital downloads, and while they don’t tend to use our community forums (since they get direct support), I haven’t heard of any timeout issues. And I have seen sites move off WordPress.com only to move back right away over performance issues. I’m proud of the service we offer here :)

To be frank, in your case I’d be less concerned about whether they can download the 3GB files and more whether your site will have enough space with 200GB. If that won’t be an issue, your site should do great on the Business plan.

We also have WordPress.com VIP for sites with very heavy traffic. You can see some of our clients on this page.

Regarding transferring your site as it is, we do have a full-site import feature with the Business Plan. It often just works, but if there’s anything that needs straightening up after the transfer, you’ll have direct support for help.

    Does this help?
