Questions about Exporting?

  • Unknown's avatar

So I’ve searched for an answer to my question on these forums and have often found users being redirected here:

    Export Your Website’s Content

I’m thinking about planning a move from wordpress.com to a wordpress.org hosting and I’ve been reading up on how to do it myself via the Exporting / Importing functionality. But I’ve been warned to get a backup of my blog (www.themetalpigeon.com) on my hard drive before making any attempt at exporting the site.

So my question is does exporting my site simply make a copy of its contents into a file that I can download and still keep my blog up at my wordpress.com space? Or does Exporting remove the site entirely from wordpress.com immediately into my downloaded export file? I’m concerned that I should have more than one backup of it in existence just incase there is a problem with the transferring process and/or a file corruption. Thanks for any info.

    Hi,

So my question is does exporting my site simply make a copy of its contents into a file that I can download and still keep my blog up at my wordpress.com space?

Yes, the Export tool creates a series of .xml files of the site’s content. That’s why it is often used to create a backup, as well as in moving the content elsewhere. Exporting has no effect upon the existing site.

I’m concerned that I should have more than one backup of it in existence just incase there is a problem with the transferring process and/or a file corruption.

Creating a second backup, although not necessary, is a good idea.

Thanks for the reply…. good to know that exporting will not have an effect on the existing site. I guess if something really crazy happened WordPress.com itself should have a backup they could give me.

    You’re welcome. : -)

    Possibly.

    Hi @station82o,

We continually backup all sites here, so your content is safe.

If you delete a site, that content is held for 30 days, and the site can be restored during that period so that you could do an export. After 30 days, the site content is purged and the site is permanently deleted.
