Questions about extra storage space limitations
-
Howdy.
I’ve scoured the help files and have not found answers to the following questions about the limitations of WordPress.com storage.
Are the contents of .zip files decompressed and searched by the server when they are uploaded, to ensure the content is within WordPress rules? If so, what are those rules and where are they posted?
– Such as, if I made a game that contained a video cut scene, could I host the game in a zip file or would the cut scene video inside the zip file not be allowed? Are alternate “zip” formats, such as tar.gz, tar.bz2, and .7z supported? If not, why? They are open source and widely used by the Linux/BSD community and are in no way harmful.
What is the maximum file size for a single .zip file?
As an example of my concern, I’d like to host a download for GPL open source Linux based game (written in C++, not browser based) that I created. I’d like to make sure that’s possible before spending $20 on a space upgrade (which I would not otherwise need). This game consists of text files, png images, wav/ogg sound files, and a binary compiled for Linux. It’s roughly 150MB in size when zipped. Is that acceptable?
Thank you for your time,
R. Bassett Jr.

Hi there –
You can upload .zip files with the space upgrade, but not alternate zip formats:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/accepted-filetypes/I don’t think there is a limit on how large the file itself can be, but you might also look into using the Box.net widget (or a similar external service) for this:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/boxnet-widget/That might work better for you than hosting the files on your blog, and then you wouldn’t need a space upgrade.

Hi Eurello,
Thank you for the feedback and suggestion.
After looking into the policies of Box.net, I’m not interested in using their services, due to the amount of data they collect and share when people use their site. Compare their “privacy” policy to that of WordPress.com and it’s a world of difference. Not my cup tea.
The options I’ve been considering are a $60 site hosting from Gandi.net (my domain registrar) or a $20 WordPress space upgrade. I used to do the hosting thing years ago, until one year when the provider literally doubled the price! As fun as it was, that was just not worth it lol…
Honestly it would suit my needs best to host my own site once more, especially for any HTML5 games I make. Then folks could play them without having to download and unzip them (which may not be possible on their device). Plus I’ll get databases and SSH/FTP login. Wooohoo! :)
That said, I’ve been impressed by the flexibility and functionality of WordPress.com, so thanks for being awesome.

Hi there – I think for your purposes, self-hosting will probably be better for you. :)
Thanks for the kind words, and let us know if you need anything in future!
