Questions about online shop…
-
Hi,
I’m planning to set up a new site for a client in the next month. It will be a restaurant site and he wishes to sell his take away menu online. I am aware of the business plan here, but am wondering about other options,
Is it possible to have the premium plan, but then have a link on the WP site that sends the viewer off to an external online shop? Part of my reason for asking this is I’d prefer to use a NZ based ecommerce site. Is this possible, or do we have to upgrade to the business, and can only use one of the three options for ecommerce? (Shopify, ecwid, Gumroad.)
One of the NZ based ecommerce sites I’m considering is Storbie.
I haven’t purchased anything yet as I want to be sure I’m doing the best thing for the client.
Thank you.

The only secure payment system on wordpress.COM sites is for those who purchase the Business upgrade http://store.wordpress.com/plans/business/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/ecommerce/Provided you are selling only what you yourself make or a service that you personally provide you have two options.
(1) Some bloggers create a contact form and after the people have made a PayPal donation they provide the link to a private page for downloading files. Maybe that will work for you.

(2) If you set up an eCommerce site somewhere else online you can create a custom menu http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/ and include a custom link to that site in it on any wordpress.COM hosted site with or without a Premium upgrade http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/#adding-custom-links
No blogger initiated advertising is allowed on WordPress.com blogs. The only advertising program at WordPress.com is called WordAds and it’s for blogs on their own domains.

http://en.wordpress.com/apply-for-wordads/Advertising outside of WordAds at WordPress.com is not allowed.
http://support.wordpress.com/advertising/ Here’s what gets a blog suspended:

http://en.wordpress.com/tos/1. WordPress.com allows bloggers to insert text affiliate links within post and page content to most third-party affiliate programs, provided they are not the primary content of the site in question.
2. Image affiliate links in posts and pages and any banners, affiliate links in sidebar or footer widget areas, are still considered to be advertising and are not allowed on WordPress.com blogs.
A self-hosted wordpress.ORG install may be a better option. WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different username accounts, logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support documentation and separate support forums. Read the differences here http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
We provide support only for wordpress.COM hosted sites. Our support docs do not apply to (1) local installs of wordpress.ORG software on your own server or (2) wordpress.ORG software installs on paid hosting, and we do not provide support for them at wordpress.COM.
If you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG account, then click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right-hand corner of the page that opens, https://wordpress.org/support/register.php so you can post to the support forums there.

WordPress.org support docs are at https://codex.wordpress.org/Main_Page

Thank you for that thorough response. I will talk with my client and decide what works best for them.
Probably will be using an external shop, with a custom menu link on the WP site. Thank you again.
Smiles,
