Questions about PayPal buttons

  • Unknown's avatar

I have a small online business (on Etsy) and make one of a kind products. I’d like to expand into using my website/blog on WordPress as an online store and have some questions about PayPal buttons.

Being as my items are one of a kind, if I set up a PayPal button next to a product, and it’s the only one of the product, and someone buys it, does the button still remain with the product photo? I’m thinking it does. This would mean I’d have to either replace the photo with a new product, or remove the photo and the button entirely to show that it’s out of stock, right? How can this be better utilized?

And lastly, how many PayPal buttons per page can I use?

    Thanks in advance

  • Hi –

I’ll be happy to help you get this started. Can you tell me more about the products?

For example, what volume are you selling? how many product variations are there?

Sorry, lizkarkoski, I thought I answered you through another means, but it appears I didn’t. I would like to thank you for your help and coming forth!
The products I sell are all one of a kind. I don’t have two or more, nor do I mass produce them, so there is no way one can buy a multiple. For one example, I sell handmade cell phone pouches. They come in different sizes, colors and types. What makes them unique, and therefore, one of a kind are the embellishments (in this case vintage embroidery) attached to them.
Volume-wise, I don’t sell a lot and I’m basically considered a small shop; I much prefer to keep it this way!
My goal is to set up my website to sell some products, independent from Etsy, to see how it goes. When I thought of setting it up, a thought came to mind: If I have one of a kind products, which means I will have to add one of a kind photos, and if one of those items attached to a photo sells, I would have to remove the photo, right? (Because there wouldn’t be another. Nor would there be a variation) Would I have to remove the button?
It’s possible that I’m thinking in the background of some kind of inventory management for my website through the use of the buttons. Is this possible? Now, bear in mind that my business isn’t big enough for all the whistles and bells that your best e-commerce plan has; nor do I want to devote this much time to it. But something where one of my followers is very interested in an item they can purchase, would make me very happy.
I hope this explains things. I am sure you can investigate further using my profile and my linked sites. Or through the menu on my site.
    Thank you in advance!

  • It sounds like exactly what you’ll need will be our Store offering: https://en.support.wordpress.com/store/

That does require a paid Business or eCommerce plan though.

The next option would be a PayPal button, which you can use even on the free plan: https://en.support.wordpress.com/paypal/

The problem here though is you wouldn’t be able to cleanly sell variations of a product, like cell phone pouches. You’d need a separate button for every single option. This option also doesn’t keep track of stock, so the button would stay up until you remove it.

Thank you, Macmanx. You gave me some good things to think about, especially about the button not keeping track of stock. I think I’ll try this method out first, to see how it goes, and if it’s successful, I’ll upgrade my plan.

Thanks so much for your help!
