Questions about switching blog to self hosting and advertising

I am thinking about switching over to a self hosted blog in order to monetize my site with ads. I did some reading on the pros and cons of self hosting and come across this sentence:

“You’re also responsible for performing routine updates and backing up your content.”

Does anyone know what exactly that means? How do you perform a “routine update”, and what does it mean by backing up content? Do blogs have the potential of disappearing? Can I keep the wordpress.com as a form of backup? If I transfer the material to the self hosted blog, will people who try to visit the WP.com blog be redirected to my self hosted site?

I also read somewhere that tagging cannot be used in self hosting. Is there any truth to that?

I’d love to get some feedback from anyone who has made the switch or that can answer these questions.

    Thanks

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Dude, I just answered you 11 minutes ago. https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/attention-anyone-who-has-self-hosted-should-i-self-host?replies=4#post-2124891

You can tag in self-hosted blogs. The tags just don’t connect to the WP.com tag system.
