Questions about WordPress.com hosting plans
-
Do any of your WordPress.com hosting plans include or offer the option of purchasing a dedicated IP address for my website (let’s call it mywebsite.xyz)?
I believe only your higher-tier plans allow you to install plugins. I assume this refers to 3rd-party plugins, not the ones by Automattic, correct?
I currently have multiple emails ending with @mywebsite.xyz. Do you offer multiple emails with my website’s URL extension or only one?
Which is the lowest-tier WordPress.com hosting plan you recommend for an early-stage
eCommerce site still in the validation phase (say 10,000 monthly visitors)? How about 100,000 monthly visitors?I realize these questions will be posted in your public forums, so if I wanted to get more specific answers (including pricing), would I need to first sign up for a paid WordPress.com plan first to talk to someone on your sales team?

Hi @cwwwc, we’re happy to answer your questions here or reach out over email, so let us know if you’d like us to do that!
To answer what you’ve asked so far:
RE: a dedicated IP address, I’m not sure, but if you’ll let me know the context we can find the most relevant info for you. For example, if it’s for SSL, we handle that for you in all of our plans, so you won’t need one for that.
The Business & eCommerce plans allow plugin installation, and you’d need one of those for WooCommerce. Either would work fine for 100,000 visitors or 10,000.
The email plans we offer are sold on a per-inbox basis, but you’d be welcome to use another mail provider if you prefer:
https://wordpress.com/support/add-email/The email pricing we have is on that page. And, you can find all of our plan pricing here:
https://wordpress.com/pricingAgain, though, if you have more questions you’d like to ask privately, we’d be happy to chat. Let us know!

Hi @staff-quasir, tip of the hat to you for the well-crafted response! It did clear a lot up for me.
Regarding the dedicated IP address: I’ll have to plead ignorance here. I found out about it through my current hosting provider. According to cPanel, my website currently has a shared IP address (and since you mentioned it, basic, free SSL and not a “dedicated” SSL certificate). I’m not sure about the context; all I know is that I want the best possible security and reliability for my eCommerce website. I do use the WooCommerce plugin.
On a related note (and at the risk of sounding like I’m being paid to say this), from a security and reliability point of view, wouldn’t WordPress.com be the ideal hosting solution for WooCommerce users? Assuming your answer is yes, please elaborate further. Why should I choose WordPress.com over 3rd-party hosting services (even those you recommend)?
For whatever reason, I couldn’t find a way to contact you guys privately via email. Is there something I missed, or is that option only available for paid plans?

You can read more about this here:

We’re a bit biased about our hosting, so of course we would like you to host with us, but we do have a page that covers the benefits of hosting with us or on your own provider here:

Email and live chat support are only available to paid plan owners, but I’m sure we can help you here in the free support forums.
I hope that helps!

I do want to clarify too, the WordPress software itself is secure if properly maintained. A lot of times when you hear of a WordPress site being broken into, it’s that someone’s not keeping their plugins and installation up to date, or they’ve gone and added a plugin from a disreputable source. Or, more often than not, they’re using the same login and password for their site that they’ve used on every other site out there.
So the advantage of WordPress.com the service is we are actively maintaining all of this. And we’ve got an excellent sysadmin team who not only keeps our sites up and running smoothly, but is on top of any potential security issues. You can read more about our security practices here:
https://wordpress.com/support/security/Oh and to address the dedicated IP address thing once more, some hosts need that to install an SSL certificate. Again, our talented systems team takes care of that for all of our users here as part of our service.
Let us know if we can help with anything else!

I appreciate the additional info! I already signed up for your eCommerce plan, but all of this is good to know and reaffirms my choice.
