questions before getting a subscription…

  • Unknown's avatar

i currently have 2 wordpress blogs hosted elsewhere. i have it connected with jetpack. i’d like to move it to wordpress.com.

    – i have SSL, does the paid subscription include SSL? do i bring my own and who will install it? if i get the professional plan (up to 3 sites), will they each or all have SSL?

    – can i use amazon s3 to store my images? how does it work if i’d like to leave and export the data?

    – will my existing blog from another host be moved to wordpressdotcom automatically? then i’ll just redirect the dns? or do i have to export then import?

    – is google analytics only allowed in business? is it allowed in professional plan?

    thanks for the help.

  • Hi there,

    – i have SSL, does the paid subscription include SSL? do i bring my own and who will install it? if i get the professional plan (up to 3 sites), will they each or all have SSL?

All sites on WordPress.com has SSL enabled automatically, whether you use a free *.wordpress.com subdomain, or your own custom/mapped domain. It doesn’t cost anything extra, and you don’t need to do anything to activate it. We use certificates issued by Let’s Encrypt.

    – can i use amazon s3 to store my images? how does it work if i’d like to leave and export the data?

You can store your media on any hosting service, including Amazon S3. However, you get 3GB free storage with each site as well, which you can upgrade to 13GB with Premium and unlimited storage with Business. When you click the Add Media button in a post you have a choice between uploading media to your site, or embedding it via a link from somewhere else.

Should you let a plan expire, uploaded media over the storage limit won’t be removed, but you’ll not be able to upload new media.

We allow you to export content as an XML file which contains links to your image files, be it in the media library or hosted somewhere else, but the file does not contain the media files themselves. If you import that file to another WordPress site (.com or self-hosted) the importer will fetch your images on WordPress.com and transfer them to the new site’s library. Importing to other services might not work the same. It’s not possible to export media files uploaded to WordPress.com separately.

    – will my existing blog from another host be moved to wordpressdotcom automatically? then i’ll just redirect the dns? or do i have to export then import?

You will need to manually import your content. We have instructions how to do that here:

    Moving from a Self-Hosted WordPress to WordPress.com

    – is google analytics only allowed in business? is it allowed in professional plan?

Google Analytics can only be used with sites on the Business Plan.

Let me know if you have any more questions.
