Questions for wp.com and wp.org users

Hello if here is anybody here who has experiences with wp.com and wp.org as far as set up, one click install, fantastico, ease or issues with your hosting, server type?…etc i’de like to know. As I mentioned before (if anybody remembers) I inquired about self hosting now i’m almost ready to install the wp.org just having an issue trying to understanding it. I would be a total newbie at this..my hosting is currently with LP, i’m on a Linxus server, i have fantastico in my account (never used my hosting before) so if your familiar and/or currently use both blogging platforms feel free to let me know.

plug-ins, updates, tips, suggestions, pros & cons in from your own experiences…are welcomed

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

So far I’ve installed two themes and five plugins and crashed the site seven times. Unfortunately, it’s part of a blog network, so I took all fourteen blogs down each of those seven times. We have a VIP kind of hosting, so it wasn’t down long each time, but it was down and I didn’t know what to do about it.

So, a highly experienced WP.com user is still fully capable of killing the blog repeatedly, even if just doing regular things and installing approved plugins and themes.

Fantastico has worked well when I’ve used it, and all it requires is a few answers from you (make sure and write down all usernames and passwords etc. for the databases and for wordpress during the installation process. Also, some hosts are not real good about updating fantastico (and sometimes fantastico is slow) so you might end up with an older version of wordpress. You can update it though once the installation through fantastico is done.

There could be some changes you will have to make to wp-config.php once everything is installed, and in some cases you might have to create a php.ini file so that you can increase the PHP memory limit wordpress can use. Some hosts allow this and some do not. I’ve found that with 2.9.2 you really need to assign 64MB PHP memory to wordpress for plugin and wordpress updates to work smoothly.

What raincoaster says is entirely possible too. If things go wrong, you are the one that has to troubleshoot and fix it. Now that should not scare you off since, knock on wood, I’ve got a total of 10 wordpress blogs I update and manage the back end on and have yet to have one of them go down due to an upgrade. Plugins are a different matter. My suggestion is to only use plugins that are listed in the wordpress.org/extend pages. That is no guarantee that one of them is not going to hurt you, but the chances are a lot less. Also, read the comments and issues that people have with the plugins. Those can be very telling.

And lastly, do back ups faithfully at least every week. I always go through the cPanel backup wizard since it backs up all files in your account including the MySQL database. If anything should go wrong, you can restore from that backup in a flash.

Yikes! it would seem that wordpress.org is seriously for the experienced blogger which i’m clearly not…i lack the know how on almost everything you guys named form PHP to MYSQL to plugins to FTP, CSS…ect To bad that its not as imply to manage as wp.com is to many. Thanks for sharing hopefully more info will come in so others can benefit from that as well.

It depends on your host and how much research you’re willing to do. I went in blind and just started poking around. Naturally, i would break something.

Oh, and the downloadable Duotone theme doesn’t work at all without serious hacking. I mean, it fails to display images or content. That’s a pretty big fail for a theme that was released recently.

I too am going in bling figure thats the best way to learn something, extra thanks about that particuliar theme issue (i’m taking notes as i’ve replied) as for host I have the basic hosting plan with Lunar Pages, a few people said that fantastico makes things alot smoother oppose to the regular way of installing wp.org My goal is to create a mirror image of our current blog here or a little bit better in designer nothing to major though.

I’ll do a little more research then decide if i’m going in DIY or continue waiting on our designer to handle things, waiting sucks and designers tend to do things when they want to do them (not all, but some) i’ll certainly keep you all posted either way. One thing for sure the simplicity of wp.com will be missed, instant click n fix…etc

Self-hosting can, once you get set up and get things working, be smooth sailing. Mine for the most part has. I did, with the help of one of the wordpress developers have to create a plugin to take care of a browser-specific issue I had been working around for quite some time.

I’ve also had to make several trips into my wp-config.php file, my .htaccess file, and my php.ini file to make adjustments and additions to take care of issues that would crop up after an upgrade.

Here at wordpress.COM, all you really have to worry about is blogging as long as you are not a plugin, javascript or flash junkie, and you can find a theme here that you like and can work with.

wp-config.php file, my .htaccess file, and my php.ini file

oh oh, looks like I have my work cut out for me because I know nothing about any of those, the swaggtalk100 blog will stay up, but another on a self hosted server is needed as we are limited here with all things revolving around ur blog. Not a flash or java junkie thats for sure, but more widgets and more themes would be great to have.

    Good morning!

Thanks for all the suggestions so far it all helps to a degree, i’ve been to Timethiefs site numerous times she does have alot of info there, however that in conjunction with other users who are familiar with both platforms (even if their a novice) still would be appreciated…would’nt wont to limit the learning experience to the know-how to just 2 or 3 pro bloggers.

I wish it always was as simple as soley using wp.com :(

The bottom line is unless and until you have the sill sets required to manage a wordpress.ORG install it’s not in your best interest to leave the wordpress.COM blogging platform. If you have partial skills and someone who is fully skilled who will drop everything when something goes wrong and “fix” it for you then that would be an exception.

…everytime something goes wrong, hmm and I can only imagine having countless errors and needing somebody to fix it for us…i’m even confused on what all do i need to have installed on my PC to operate ot from with my hosting account? Thanks for chiming in as usual TT. Very temped to log back into my hosting acount, click install and just play around a bit to see where it goes, but not sure all the tech talk has me a bit discouraged at the moment.
