Questions of Fees and Capabilities of WordPress

We are launching a new website that is video content heavy and will have a number of users viewing videos simultaneously. We are using WordPress as our website platform and need answers addressing two different points.

    1 – E-commerce
    2 – Essential bandwidth

It seems as though there are platforms outside of website hosts that provide storage for videos and e-commerce options allowing a viewer to purchase and view the videos. We have been told that using such an offsite platform can keep the website from slowing down due to bandwidth overload. Would you please answer the following questions pertaining to what WordPress offers.

1 – Is there a gigabit limit for video storage and viewing on WordPress? Currently we have 7 videos greater than 4 GB and 4 of them are actually greater than 5 GB. If it has a limit, does WordPress offer additional bandwidth purchase so it can accommodate?

2 – We are expecting a number of viewers simultaneously watching these videos. What sort of bandwidth does WordPress offer? We currently have a total of 72 GB of video content but do not yet know how many simultaneously viewers there may be. What is WordPress’s limit and is there an option to buy additional bandwidth as we see more and more viewers accessing these videos simultaneously.

3 – Does WordPress provide e-commerce along with your video storage and if so, what does it charge? Is a flat fee per month of is it a percentage of each sale?

We need to make a decision in the next 7-10 days on choosing the appropriate platform(s). Thank you in advance for you help.

    I don’t have a site with WordPress.com yet

We would also be open to recommendations for a service that would best be used if WordPress is not capable of handling our e-commerce and video storage needs. For example, what do most educational institutes use for their teaching and e-commerce?

  • Hi there, just to check – were you planning to host the site here on WordPress.com with us?

If so then you may well find that our Business plan with WooCommerce installed, and VideoPress fulfills your needs:

WordPress as a software doesn’t offer specific payment gateway services; but when using the WooCommerce plugin for ecommerce, there are payment gateways which work with WooCommerce (for example: Stripe, WooCommerce Payments, Paypal). The fees charged vary depending on the service.

If you’re planning to use the WordPress software (that comes from WordPress.org) with a different host, then your questions regarding video storage would generally be better addressed by the host you’re considering!
