Questions on Moving from Paid to Unpaid Domain
-
Hi,
I would like to move my blog to an unpaid domain on WordPress. The blog in question is:
http://historical-sociology.org/Is it enough to follow Settings > Change Site Address to change from historical-sociology.org to historicalsociology.wordpress.com? If I follow these steps:
1. Do the charges for the domain name automatically cease or is there anything extra that needs to be done to cancel the payments?
2. Is it possible to get a refund for the last payment?
3. Will the content of the paid domain/site remain in its entirety on the unpaid domain/site?
Many thanks
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Do you wish to keep the domain URL and use it on another site? If the answer is no then please type modlook into the sidebar tags on this thread for Staff help. How do I get a Moderator/Staff reply for my question? https://en.support.wordpress.com/getting-help-in-the-forums/#how-do-i-get-a-moderatorstaff-reply-for-my-question Then please subscribe to this thread so you are notified when they respond. To subscribe look in the sidebar of this thread, find the subscribe to topics link and click it.
Do you want to cancel the domain URL and never use it again?
WordPress.com provides a 30-day refund on all upgrades except Domain Registrations, Domain Renewals, and Guided Transfers. The refund period for Domain Registrations and Renewals is 48 hours.
Note: It takes from 1 – 2 weeks for the refund to be received.
Provided you are logged in under the same username account that purchased the upgrade, and you are within the allowed time frame for refunds, you can cancel and request a refund from your dashboard > Store > My Upgrades. You can also disable auto-renew there. http://en.support.wordpress.com/my-upgrades/#canceling-upgrades
See here:
Dashboard > Store > My Upgrades

as well as

Yes but read these so you know exactly what you are doing and what the consequences of removing domain mapping will be.

Many thanks for the very helpful and informative reply thistimethisspace. I also added modlook to the tags. I’ll see what the moderators say.

Hi there,
The domain mapping upgrade for historical-sociology.org is owned by a different administrator on the site, so only that administrator can manage the upgrade itself (to manage the upgrade’s auto renew settings, cancel it before it expires, or handle other payment/refund issues). You can view a list of all the administrators on the site, if you need, under Users > All Users in the site’s WP Admin dashboard.
You can switch between the site’s custom domain historical-sociology.org and its free address historicalsociology.wordpress.com on the My Domains page at any time — that will change the address that visitors see when they view the site.
To manage the details of the domain mapping upgrade itself, please ask the administrator who purchased the upgrade to contact us directly for more help with that. :)

Hello again,
I did switch to the free address historicalsociology.wordpress.com on the My Domains page, but when the free address welcomes me with a message: “Uh oh! Your blog’s domain historical-sociology.org expired 4 days ago!” which I cannot get rid of. Any idea why?
Many thanks.

Hi there,
The expired domain mapping upgrade was still on the site (to give the upgrade owner time to renew it if they wanted to), which is why that message appeared. The domain mapping upgrade isn’t on the site anymore, so you won’t see that message again. :)
