Questions on Plan Upgrade
-
Hi, I’m looking to upgrade from the free plan to a paid plan, but I had a few lingering questions related to the Plans section (https://en.support.wordpress.com/plan-features/#wordpress-com-personal) that I’m hoping to find answers to:
1) Are there any gotchas/hidden fees around the ‘free’ custom domain included with the plans? For example, is the domain only free for the first year, but then requires me to pay additional fees to keep the domain after that? (I’m asking because Wix used to do this.) Or is the domain included with my plan as long as I’m a paying customer of WordPress.com?
2) If I choose the Personal plan to start and then want to upgrade to Premium later, will this impact my registered domain in anyway, or can I transfer the existing domain to the new WordPress plan seamlessly? Thanks so much!

Hi there,
1) Every upgrade plan is per site, per year and includes either registering a new custom domain name or mapping one you already own. As long as you renew your upgrade plan on time (you automatically sign up for auto-renew when you purchase an upgrade plan), your domain name included in the plan will also be covered.
2) Upgrading your site to a higher plan will only add new features. It will not have any impact on the existing domain settings.

You’re welcome but let me add one further clarification.
If you intend to map a domain you already own rather than buy a new domain through WordPressdotcom, you will continue to pay your domain registration fee with your registrar. If you want to keep it all in one place, WordPressdotcom does accept incoming domain transfers. Here’s more on that https://en.support.wordpress.com/incoming-domain-transfer/
Let us know if you have more questions.
