Questions on plugins and themes allowed in WordPress Business

Hi – I run ottverse.com (self-hosted) and am considering moving it to WordPress.com under a Business plan.
I use Ezoic for ad monetization. Can I continue to use them on WordPress.com?
Here is a list of plugins I use and need – can you tell me if I can still use them on a Business Plan?

Hello there,
Happy to help you with this.
Plugins that are not compatible are:
- WPS Hide Login
- WP File Manager
A full list of incompatible plugins can be found here: https://wordpress.com/support/plugins/incompatible-plugins/
I also use custom themes. Will I be able to use them?
You can use custom themes on the business plan, and the site as a whole can be migrated as is.
Does WordPress offer services to migrate from self-hosted to WordPress.com Business plans?
Yes and this is the process overall.
Over here at WordPress.com, you would need to first create a site here: https://wordpress.com/start/domains > use a free WordPress.com domain (i.e. example.WordPress.com), and not the intended domain at this stage and the business plan would need to be purchased along the way.
At the live site, please install the Jetpack plugin, and then follow these steps to import the site: https://wordpress.com/support/import/import-an-entire-wordpress-site/
Once the import is complete, it would then be possible to either transfer the domain over to WordPress.com, or connect the domain via the site (which is free to do with the business plan) via custom DNS settings:
- https://en.support.wordpress.com/incoming-domain-transfer/ (domain transfer)
- https://wordpress.com/support/domains/connect-existing-domain/ (domain connection)
What is your website about exactly, and what does the functionality do? The reason why I ask is because, there may be an opportunity to streamline the plugin usage there. For example, you wouldn’t need Updraft plus, as back ups and being able to restore a site is a feature we provide ( https://en.support.wordpress.com/restore/ ). Also, you may not need, wpDataTables or WP File Manager as it’s possible to access the database via PHPMyAdmin the files of the site via SFTP.
Looking forward to hearing more!

Thanks for the great answer, aleone89.
The site is a magazine for the OTT industry, and its been running since early 2020. So, a lot of crud has built up over time. As you’ve pointed out, some of the plugins might not be useful.
We definitely need the multi-author plugin, Ezoic (they confirmed that I can use them with the WordPress Business Plan), and a few others.
I can do without WPS Hide Login (basically to block a lot of spam logins), WP File Manager, and UpdraftPlus (because you guys will handle the backups).
You also mentioned that I could migrate the entire site to a temporary domain and then change the DNS settings. If something gets messed up during the transfer process, do I have the option to blow away all the work and start from scratch?
How long do you think the migration might take? Is a weekend sufficient, or should I factor in 4 – 5 days?
Thank you for your support!

Hi there,
You also mentioned that I could migrate the entire site to a temporary domain and then change the DNS settings. If something gets messed up during the transfer process, do I have the option to blow away all the work and start from scratch?
Correct, you can fully set up your new site with us before pointing the domain here. That way your current site can stay “live” until your new one is ready.
When you first create your site we will assign a staging subdomain you can use to get set up in private. When you are ready to “launch” the new site to replace the current one, that is when you will want to “map” or transfer your domain to us.
If you need to reset the site staff will be able to help with that, and you can use the live chat option built into the Business Plan (if you choose the yearly billing option) for the fastest help possible.
How long do you think the migration might take? Is a weekend sufficient, or should I factor in 4 – 5 days?
The migration process usually is 24 hours or less, and is dictated by the size of the current site. We’re not able to see those details now but typically it’s media-heavy sites (those with lots of high res images, audio, or video) that would take the longest.
From there you have some time to assess the new site (at the temporary address) and make any changes from there, then connect the domain. It’s worth noting that if the yearly (not monthly) billing is selected, the domain transfer is free and when it’s finalized, we tack on a free year of registration for added savings.
Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.
