How easy is the switch? I would need it to be a smooth transition in domain hosting service and I would need my email to properly work after doing the switch.

  • Hi! In order to better answer that, I’d like to confirm – were you intending to keep using the same email service provider, but just point your domain to a site here on WordPress.com?

If that’s the case, then what I would suggest is:

    1. When you’re in the preparation stage, create a connection to your domain here on WordPress.com, but do not make any changes to the name servers at your domain provider yet. In other words, complete step 1 only of this guide:
      https://wordpress.com/support/domains/connect-existing-domain/
    2. From your current provider, you’d need the MX records, and any other relevant DNS records for your email service. You can then add them to the domain connection here:
      https://wordpress.com/support/add-email/add-other-email/
    3. Once you’re happy that your site is set up here on WordPress.com, and the DNS records for your email service are added, then you could complete the rest of the steps of the “connect existing domain” guide – pointing your domain to our name servers, and setting the domain as primary here:
      https://wordpress.com/support/domains/set-a-primary-address/

If you’re planning to change to a different email provider (for example, our Professional Email service) then the process would theoretically be somewhat the same; except for step 2 you’d be setting up the new email service here, rather than adding the DNS records for the existing service.

This is a general overview however, if you have further questions please feel free to ask!
