Questions pertaining to a wordpress – Premium version website ($8 monthly/$96 annual cost)
-
The content categories that I would definitely like to include on the site include:
Photos
Videos
DocumentsI have the following related questions:
If there was a means of additionally utilizing the site for announcements (e.g. logistics of an upcoming family reunion) and/or a means for folks to ‘chat’ via the site that would be optimal, but neither of these additional functions are critical – are these functions possible?
Also:
1) Are there certain formats that each of photographs, videos, and documents must be converted to in order to be loaded onto the site and then viewable by others?
2) Once these are loaded onto the site, are they protected in such a way that they cannot be inadvertently deleted or altered by someone who is viewing them or who is adding new items to the site?
3) Can duplicates of items on the site be ‘pulled off’ by site visitors who would like to add an item to their personal computer (with of course the original item on the site being preserved there? [note: this function would be optimal but is not essential]
4) Can items be loaded only by designated individuals, or is there a way for the site to be open such that anyone accessing it could add an item(s) vs. only one or more site managers/adminstrators being able to add items? -
Hi there,
If there was a means of additionally utilizing the site for announcements (e.g. logistics of an upcoming family reunion) and/or a means for folks to ‘chat’ via the site that would be optimal, but neither of these additional functions are critical – are these functions possible?
If your site is public you may use blog posts to for announcements, have a page which embeds https://en.support.wordpress.com/google-calendar/ for logistics, and provide visitors to the site other details of the event.
You can add chat through the third party Tlk.io
1) Are there certain formats that each of photographs, videos, and documents must be converted to in order to be loaded onto the site and then viewable by others?
We accept a variety of file formats which you’ll find at:
If you’d like to upload videos directly to your site you’ll need to upgrade your account to the Premium Plan or above. Otherwise, videos can be stored on other providers such as YouTube or Vimeo.
Once uploaded to the site and added to a Post or Page content can be seen by anyone visiting it on a public site and site users on a private site.
2) Once these are loaded onto the site, are they protected in such a way that they cannot be inadvertently deleted or altered by someone who is viewing them or who is adding new items to the site?
Site visitors will not be able to remove content. However, if you’re allowing others to post to the site check out User Roles to see what permissions each user gets. Those with a role of Author or above will be allowed to delete media. Only add users to the site that you trust.
3) Can duplicates of items on the site be ‘pulled off’ by site visitors who would like to add an item to their personal computer (with of course the original item on the site being preserved there? [note: this function would be optimal but is not essential]
For images and documents, copies can be saved to a visitors local device.
4) Can items be loaded only by designated individuals, or is there a way for the site to be open such that anyone accessing it could add an item(s) vs. only one or more site managers/adminstrators being able to add items?
We currently do not support public posting and uploading to a site. Only those with the correct user role will be able to post.
Hope this helps and let us know if you still have other questions.

These responses were very helpful. In now preparing to move further forward with our WordPress Premium site, I have the following additional questions:
I presume one can set the structure up that files can be loaded into different sections on the site (e.g. , audios, videos, photographs, documents) – correct? Assuming so, can one then search within or across each of these sections for specific files of interest? Assuming so, is there the capacity to do multi-dimension searches, so for example a search within a larger umbrella file followed in the same search by a search for a subset of files embedded under that umbrella?
What is the overall capacity of aPremium site – e.g. what is the overall combined capacity for all types of files (audios, videos, photographs, documents) that will be loaded on the site?
Do I understand correctly that there is no additional charge (beyond the annual $96 annual Premium option fee) for hosting the site?
Thanks in advance. Joel Rosenthal

Hi Joel,
I presume one can set the structure up that files can be loaded into different sections on the site (e.g. , audios, videos, photographs, documents) – correct?
Yes, it’s possible to create posts and pages containing different types of media. You could also categorise posts containing video, audio etc, to make them easier to find.
It’s worth noting the Media Library doesn’t provide the option to organise/upload media into separate folders — all files will be displayed in one list but the Media Library is searchable.
for example a search within a larger umbrella file followed in the same search by a search for a subset of files embedded under that umbrella?
The Search Widget can be added to your site:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/search-widget/
However any functionality beyond this would require a custom plugin — they are supported on sites using the Business plan.
What is the overall capacity of aPremium site
The Premium plan includes 13GB of storage space. Videos could take up a fair amount of that but embedding (rather than uploading to the site) would help you get the most of our your storage space:
Do I understand correctly that there is no additional charge (beyond the annual $96 annual Premium option fee) for hosting the site?
That’s correct — the plan cost includes a custom domain as well as 13GB of storage space for one year.
Let me know if you have questions about anything I’ve mentioned above.
