Questions regarding domain registration and mapping
-
I am planning to register new domain name for my block http://techtooltip.wordpress.com. I want the new URL to be http://techtooltips.com. I searched the forum but couldn’t find definitive answers for following two questions.
1. After registration and mapping, can the blog be accessed by both old and new URL?
2. If I don’t want the new domain name for any reason (cancel/expired registration and mapping), can the blog will still be accessed with old URL (http://techtooltip.wordpress.com) after (cancellation/expiry).Thanks in advance for your time and support.

Can you believe it, I wanted to ask exactly the same question! When I first visited WordPress and registered i was offered a .com URL for $17 per year. After going through the registration process that offer does not appear! I didn’t think about the long term/cancellation etc so will have a keen eye on the response. Iwould think that as the .wordpress.com URL is a freebie then we keep the registration of both!

excogitator,
1. Yes, that is correct.
2. Yes, that is also correct.
malpasboy, if you didn’t register/map a domain when registering your account, you can always add a new domain to your blog from Upgrades -> Domains in your Dashboard.

Hi,
I have created a blog naudaseko.wordpress.com and I also have registered domain naudaseko.lv that I wish to map to my blog. As I read through domain mapping article, found out that for non-US domains I need to contact support.
I urgently need your help on this!
Thank you!

naudaseko, I have added a zone record for your domain.
You should be able to map it now following this guide: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/

@ macmanx
Thanks a lot for the confirmation, based on the technical information I know, I felt that should be the case but second opinion is always good to boost your confidence :-).@ malpasboy
I am glad to know that my question is relevant. I felt that this is important information to be made available, even I was surprised to see that no one else has asked this question yet. Perhaps, it might be obvious but we have limited knowledge about this stuff.@ raincoaster
Thanks for the update. -
I own a domain name externally, have a wordpress blog and want to divert traffic from the domain to the wordpress blog… simple right – $12.
BUT I don’t want it to mess up my email which is happily hosted with the external domain people (demon). Demon have changed the WWW nameservers as requested to ns1.wordpress.com etc. as requested, but NOT the rest of the zone… and the domain mapping thing on wordpress doesn’t seem to think that’s enough.
Any suggestions? -
Wait until staff gets back. There are TONS of threads on the front page right now to do with glitchy domain mapping issues. Save yourself some trouble and don’t do this till after the 2nd.
