quick question about permalinks

  • Unknown's avatar

    I work in the IT industry (odd for an English major, but what are you going to do) and would like to promote 4 sites; 3 that I do tech work on, and one that is about animal welfare for a friend of mine in the UK. I’ve not found a way to add permalinks to my homepage yet, but am still tinkering. Any input?

    thanks,

    timothy

    If you are talking about permalinks for the individual posts, the titles of the posts on the main page are permalinks.

    Each post you do in WP has both a Permalink and Shortlink available to you in the Posts Section of your WP Panel.

    nope, I’m talking about links to other sites. I do a lot of free IT work at techguy.org, and I’ve a mate in the UK who funds a thing called the hedgehog rescue project. I’d like to link to those in one of the offset columns, most likely via a widget, but I’m not seeing anything………..then again, I am High Lord Supreme at missing the obvious, so I thought I’d ask…….

    thanks again,

    timothy

    You have a few options. One is to simply use the links widget in the sidebar. Create the links at links > add new, create and/or assign categories to them if you wish and they will appear in the links widget.

    If you want to use an image to link to the other sites, you can use the image widget.

    The third way is to use a text widget and then write your own link code.

    Thanks, guys……there seem to be plenty of options to get this done….let me experiment a bit and I’ll get back to you.

    On another note, which do you suggest? Using the wordpress.com template or downloading the whole shebang and fiddling with it at your leisure? I like the ease of using the template, but I’m a buttons sort of guys; namely, if there are buttons visible, I’m a gonna push them. Which is why I’m leaning toward downloading the package and messing it up all on my own.

    thanks again, greatly appreciate the input.

    peace,

    timothy

    @Timothy

    Which is why I’m leaning toward downloading the package and messing it up all on my own.

    If your are inclined to mess around and want complete control of your template IMHO you will not be happy here at wordpress.COM. We cannot access our template files and edit nor can we edit themes and we cannot change permalink structure on free hosted wordpress.COM blogs. I believe you ought to consider self-hosting a free wordpress.ORG install. Please read this support documentation entry > http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

    @timothy,

    Here at .COM, we only have the paid CSS upgrade which allows us to stylize the themes here, but it cannot be used to add functionality. Those are the limitations we have to work with here. We cannot edit themes as Timethief says since this is a multi-user platform and we all share the same underlying theme and wordpress core files. One change by you would change it for all people using that particular theme.

    @timethief:

    thanks for the input. Many many MANY moons ago, I had my own domain and wrote for the same reason I write now; it keeps the voices in my head at bay. :)

    Now, however, there is such a proliferation of people that are dumping their thoughts via keyboards into the subether, well, it’s just another mark in a den of graffiti. That said, I am very happy to date with wordpress, it’s just that I know who I am and I like to fiddle with things (engineer, for what it’s worth, and yes, it drives the missus bonkers) and I know that at some point in time I will be looking to go ahead and learn how to hand code this mess.

    Thank you for the link, I’ve read that, and I do believe that in time I will be going that route.

    Did you know that your moniker anagrams to ‘patched hearts’? I like that. I also enjoy the theology behind it, but then I’m a questioning mind.

    Obviously I don’t want to change the template for the rest of the users, but I am very, very novice in CSS and, while I plan to get more into this, I do not have the resources currently. I think that you make an excellent point by stating that any change would be a global change. Yet another reason to point myself at the installed package and make the time to learn it.

    Again, I thank all of you for the assistance. I look forward to learning how to grow my blog and customize it to where I can see my internal view represented in the digital realm.

    peace,

    timothy

    Your solution did the trick. Many thanks.
