Quick question about post formats!
-
I am using the Suits Theme and in my ‘Blog’ section, which is divided up by months, I want to make it so that people need to click the name of the month to expand the information in it. Right now, everything is visible and the ‘Blog’ section is one massive page. How do I do this? Thanks!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hello,
I checked your blog and I could see that all posts under ‘Blog’ section are assigned to one category which is default WordPress category i.e. ‘ Uncategorized’
To achieve the desired results that is split content month-wise you will need to add few categories first and then you will need to assign each posts to those categories.
Below page explains what are categories and how to add them
https://en.support.wordpress.com/category-pages/
To set categories in your menu, follow the below link
Let me know if you need further assistance.

Thank you for such a quick response! I added each one to a category, but the outcome I want is to require that people need to click the month or the beginning of that section in order to read more. More specifically, if you are trying to read my May section, I don’t want you to be able to see the entire section just by clicking “Blog”; I want them to have to click May 16’s section to expand it and read it. Does that make sense?

Hello,
I have created sample structure to understand your expectations. Please visit the link below and check how it is working over there. I have created menu option in the header labelled as ‘Year 2016’ under which I have included categories such as ‘May 16, June 16… so on”. Upon clicking for say ‘May 16’ the result would be all posts assigned to category ‘May 16’.
Please let me know if you are looking for such a type of structure or something else.
To be able to have this structure on your blog, you will need to split the content into number of posts. E.g. In your case, you will need to create two separate posts as ‘Thursday, May 26th’ & ‘Tuesday, May 31st’ and assign them to one category ‘May 16’.
So, when you will click on May 16, only those two posts will show up.
Please let me know if you are getting it.

Hello,
In your case, you might want to create one Parent category labelled as ‘Year 2016’ by following the same procedure you did for ‘May-16’
Then, you can create new/edit existing categories labelled by month name using same procedure but this time selecting ‘Year 2016’ as their parent category. You will find the option to select Parent Category on the same page.
Below link might help
After creating the categories, please create new/edit existing posts and assign them to the one category only, for say
You will create two new posts named ‘Thursday, May 26th’ & ‘Tuesday, May 31st’ and assigned each to category ‘May 16’
Same way you can do for the rest of posts.
And lastly, you will just need to add these category links into your menu.
How do I make a “Year” post and then the months underneath it?
Actually, it is not a post. It is a custom menu created using categories. Menus are meant to help navigate your blog.
You can learn more about custom menus on below page
Please let me know if you get it now.

I’m really trying to understand and follow the instructions, but I am not getting it. Can you walk me through it?

I figured out how to get the drop-down menu selection, but now I am trying to figure out how to move the posts into those drop down options.

Hello,
Seems you ain’t quite getting it. Let’s get it done step by step so that you will understand.
1. Login to your WP-admin dashboard using below link. (Every blog has one WP-admin dashboard by default)
https://whiskeytangoweb.wordpress.com/wp-admin
2. On the left hand side, you will see lots of options listed on a sidebar. Go to
Posts –> Categories
Here, you will see the list of existing categories you have created so far.
3. Create categories as I explained in the above reply. i.e. in your case “2016 ” would be parent category and you will need to create new categories named with months e.g. May 2016, June 2016 etc. While creating these month categories, select “2016” as their parent categories.
4. Create drpdown as you did previously. It should show all categories you have created.
Let me know once you do till step 4. Will guide you through thereafter.

Ok – I’ve figured out my issue. I have all my months organized as “2016” being their parent category. Somewhere in the process of all of this, I created a different category called “Blog 2016”, which is what is currently showing up on my page. I believe my issue is that even though I am following your directions, everything is going into “2016”, but “2016” isn’t the one being shown to the public, even though I am doing everything you’re saying. I can’t even find “Blog 2016” anywhere to edit. I’m starting to get extremely frustrated with the amount of time something so simple should be. Would it be allowed for you to go into my account and do it?? Can I give you my password and then just change my password when you’re done?

Hello Jenn,
I just checked your blog and could see that you have done it right. I am glad that you did it on your own. Let me know if you need anything else.
On separate note, you don’t need to get frustrate if anything goes wrong as WP community is very helpful and keeps helping each other to get going. Also, try not to share your details to anyone unless things get to extreme and doing things on your own always helps you learn.
Keep smiling. Happy blogging! :)
