Quick Question on Domain Registration…

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi There,
I’m new to WordPress, and I would like to purchase a few domains, as I find that certain domains that I’m looking at are cheaper here, and they are not available on the webhosting service I’m currently looking at.

One domain is $28/yr, another is $23/yr, and another at regular pricing at $18/yr. Now my question is, are they going to be renewed at the same price initially or are they going to be more cost after the 1st year? Also, if they are indeed those prices, then I’d like to just host the domains here, but link it to an external host that I’m currently going to purchase soon, as the external webhosting service offers more tools than what WordPress hosting have currently.

So basically, I’d like to buy several domains from WordPress, leave it here, but point to an external service. When the domain renews, I would pay it here instead, as my potential new host do not offer those special domain names. Is that possible?

Thank you and have a great day!

  • Hi,

Now my question is, are they going to be renewed at the same price initially or are they going to be more cost after the 1st year?

While we can’t guarantee that our prices won’t change within the next year, we don’t do the “$1.99 for the first year and $35 when it comes time to renew” type marketing you see from some other registrars.

So basically, I’d like to buy several domains from WordPress, leave it here, but point to an external service.

You’d just need to set the domain nameservers to point to your current host:

Let us know if anything is unclear or you have any further questions.

    Hi there,
Thanks for your prompt replies, it is greatly appreciated. Now I’m trying to purchase several domains, but its just sitting at

    PREPARING YOUR DOMAIN

and nothing happens, its been sitting there the last 15mins. I’ve turned off all my Ad Blockers and Cookie Shredders, still nothing happens. I’m using the latest Firefox 64bit browser with all the addons turned off and its still doing nothing.

Please advice. Thank you and have a great day

Oh yeah, even put http://www.wordpress.com in my whitelist from my other web protection systems, still no go.

  • Hi there,

I’ve heard of this being an issue and it’s taken upwards of 30 minutes at times for that page to process, which of course is not ideal.

I wanted to see if you could possibly try the transaction under a different browser and see if that makes a difference. This could potentially help us pinpoint whether or not it is a FireFox-related issue. In the meantime, I will look into this and see if there is anything we can do on our end to rectify the problem.

    Thanks!

    Wow,
30mins? Time is money and money is time, I don’t have such luxury to sit around to wait for it to get going, especially when I have 4 domains to register. Is there any other way that I can rectify this? I will try another browser to see if it works, and I’ll get back to you, but it is absolutely not acceptable to have to wait that long to register anything this day and age. I hope you understand where I’m coming from, and I’m not trying to be rude or condecending.

Thanks again for your help, it is greatly appreciated, have a great week ahead.

Just used Chrome, Brave, Safari and Opera browsers and I’m getting this reply from the system.

Domains ending with .productions are undergoing maintenance. Please try a different extension or check back in 33 minutes.

Domains ending with .studio are undergoing maintenance. Please try a different extension or check back in 35 minutes.

Guess I’ll try back later, and I started this process since 12pm PST.

  • Thanks for letting us know. I haven’t seen this myself before, but I also haven’t bought domains with those extensions. I’m sharing this with the domains team to see if they have a recommendation.

  • Oh, I think I understand now: usually that message means your SSL certificate for hosting is being provisioned. And that can take several minutes, but typically that’s after you buy the domain and hosting.

It sounds like you’re just trying to buy domains. We’re checking in on what could be going on with that.

Just to confirm, are you using this form to make the purchase?
    https://wordpress.com/domains/

And are you also adding a site?

    Hi there,
Thanks for your response, affirmative, I’m trying to purchase my 1st domain out of 4, after I typed in my chosen domain name, it goes to that page that says

    PREPARING YOUR DOMAIN

On Firefox 64bit latest build 104.01 (my default browser) and it stays there.

Affirmative, I’m also using https://wordpress.com/domains/, strictly to just buy 4 domains, 1 at a time.

So I just went to Chrome and now it is ALLOWING me to register finally, no more waiting for hours with this on screen. But its still sitting on PREPARING YOUR DOMAIN on Firefox, don’t know why, have all the security stuff off as I have wordpress.com on whitelist and had restarted my browser.

Domains ending with .productions are undergoing maintenance. Please try a different extension or check back in 33 minutes.

Just to reiterate, I can now purchase my 1st domain, but only on Chrome, as Firefox is still sitting there trying to figure out what it had for dinner last night (sauteed php with a sprinkle of sundried JS? hmmm…), before refreshing to the next screen. So is there anyway I could get a coupon code for the issues that I’ve encounter the past day? I’m ready to buy some domains right now, and I’d really appreciate it.

Regardless, thanks for all your help, it is greatly appreciated and have a great week ahead.

  • Mmm, cookies for desert, no doubt!

So those domains were indeed under maintenance for a bit last night, but that should have been over before my last reply, even; I heard back fro the domains folks and was able to get a domain in my cart as expected.

If you buy the others in Chrome does that work? And speaking of JS, if you’d like to share any console errors / logs you’re getting, that would be helpful:
    https://wordpress.com/support/browser-issues/advanced-browser-troubleshooting/#java-script-errors

Also, if you haven’t already done so, please temporarily deactivate any browser extensions, then refreshing your cache. If one browser is misbehaving while the others are fine, this nearly always gets it to snap out of it:
    https://wordpress.com/support/browser-issues/#clearing-your-browser-cache

Re: coupons, we can check into that, but please know most of those will be for plans only. Will you be hosting a site here?
