radio stream hosting through hosts like shout/icecast
-
I am using wordpress to start a music discovery site similar to sites like pitchfork.com, earmilk.com, and chartattack.com. I want to add a music stream to my site and it seems that shout/icecast is the most popular. The only problem is I keep running into forums saying wordpress does not support shoutcast servers well. My question is, are these forums correct about wordpress not supporting shoutcast well and if so, which ones will it supoort? I also need help setting up the stream on my site. If someone could help me with this that would be great!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

There is no FTP access and no plugin capability on free hosted WordPress.com blogs.

http://en.support.wordpress.com/plugins/There is no upgrade you can purchase that changes anything at all stated here http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/ FTP access, and plugins are available only for VIP bloggers http://vip.wordpress.com/our-services/ or for those with WordPress.ORG installs.

I guess I don’t fully understand what thats telling me. Is it saying I can’t have a radio stream on my site? I know I have to buy more space to upload music for playlists but what do I have to do to get a player on my page? A player where visitors can press play and hear the same stream everyone else is listening to. I’m not very computer literate so acronyms and abbreviations are foreign to me.

I am telling you that if Shoutcast is a plugin you cannot install it on a free hosted WordPress.com blog.
I will also tell you that if Shoutcast is a JavaScript widget code or an iframe code then you cannot use it on a free hosted wordpress.com blog for security reasons. http://en.support.wordpress.com/code/

Gotcha. So what is the best way to go about putting an online radio stream on my wordpress site? By that I mean what host would work? What does everyone else use? What works best? I really dont know anything about it at all, especially the use of plug ins.

Thank you so much. I just can’t find anything telling me exactly what I need to do to get a radio stream to my site. You’ve been a lot of help though! Sorry I have no idea what I’m doing. Thanks!

We don’t officially support Shoutcast on WordPress.com, but you can link your visitors to your Shoutcast stream. As timethief noted, the only methods we support for audio are listed here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/audio/
If you need more functionality than that, you might want to look into setting up a self-hosted site using the software at WordPress.org. That way you could use one of the many Shoutcast plugins on your site.
