    Hi! random adds appear on my site https://switchtolinuxdesktop.wordpress.com/
    Hacked? How can I clean it up?

    WordPress.com displays ads on free sites. It helps to keep them free. You could remove the ads by upgrading to a paid plan.

    Thank you! I know – but these don’t look like WordPress adds . They have never appeared in the last 2 years that the site was going.
    and there has been a message from WordPress lately:
    “In July, we reported on a malvertising campaign which was distributing redirect and popup code through a number of public vulnerabilities affecting the WordPress ecosystem. As mentioned in the article, we’ve continued tracking this threat for new or changing activity.

    Much of the campaign remains identical. Known vulnerabilities in WordPress plugins are exploited to inject malicious JavaScript into the frontends of victim sites, which causes the sites’ visitors to redirect to potentially harmful content like malware droppers and fraud sites. Where possible, the payloads are obfuscated in an attempt to avoid detection by WAF and IDS software.”

    Hi there,

    The message you quote is regarding vulnerabilities that were being exploited in certain plugins for the open source WordPress software, and that injected pop-up ads into sites.

    WordPress.com is not the same thing, and that article does not apply to sites hosted on WordPress.com.

    The ads we show are not for WordPress. Visitors to your site will see ads for various products and services based on factors like their location and browser history, so no two people viewing your site will see exactly the same ads.

    They have never appeared in the last 2 years that the site was going.

    As the site owner, most of the time you won’t see ads while logged into your account. But we have been showing ads to your site visitors for as long as your site has been public.
