Random color change to…..a lot of things.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi! So uh, my wordpress changed from this nice blue/orange color scheme to this majenta/darker scheme for the editor for pages, stats page, and the wordpress blue bar at the top.

    Due to it, I also cannot see lines when I am editing anymore, despite them being there when I publish the page, so now I have no way to add lines knowing how many I am adding. Can you guys please fix this? Here’s an imgur link for examples as to what happened: https://imgur.com/a/igpldJC

    I can also confirm it hasn’t just happened to me, but someone else I know as well. Is there a fix, because I really need it back the way it was before. Thanks!

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    @thyunsuspicious, I noticed this too on the stats page but haven’t edited anything yet today. What do you mean by “lines” not showing on the editing page, do you mean the text doesn’t show up?? I’ll go try editing something. I don’t like the black and magenta on the stats page, hope it isn’t that bad on either of the editing pages… (apologies if I am double-posting, my first attempt seemed to disappear).

  • Hi @thyunsuspicious ,

    Just a few hours ago, WordPress announced they had released a way for people to customize their WordPress.com dashboard. The new colour scheme considers web accessibility and is intended to improve the WordPress experience for some users.
    Customize Your WordPress.com Dashboard

    The above post explains how to revert your dashboard back to the original colours, but I will list them here for you.

    1. On your desktop, sign in to your WordPress.com account that you’d like to customize.
    2. Click your account avatar in the upper right corner.
    3. Select Account Settings
    4. Under Dashboard Color Scheme select an option

    I hope this solves your problem. If it does, please let your friend know about it, too!

    For the records, I’m not sure if this new feature is meant to automatically turn on, though. It hasn’t done so for me. I’m going to tag this post for staff to see, just in case.

    Here’s an imgur for an example: https://imgur.com/a/fSr9J9L

    @musicsuzuranbbc

    Will try and look at that tomorrow.

  • After doing a second check, the colours in my dashboard have been changed, too. Reading the above article again, I realised they said they have given a choice between “two new color schemes”, rather than simply added a new colour scheme to choose from.

    From your desktop, you can now customize your dashboard by choosing one of our two new color schemes, Classic Bright for a fresh modern feel and Classic Blue as the standard you’ve known and loved. As part of our commitment to inclusive design, these new colors have been optimized for higher contrast and increased legibility with a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1.

    (Bold notation mine.)
    Perhaps the trouble you are facing with the lines is a side effect of this change?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Thanks musicsuzuranbbc! I will try it.

    @thyunsuspicious
    , maybe your editing page problem is a different issue? I didn’t have any trouble seeing my text in either the post or its editing page, tried the old and new editors, both in html/text view and the other one, the “visual” mode. I noticed that the update button is bright magenta now instead of blue, but I could still see all my text ok… Good luck! (your avatar is perfect for posting problems here btw love it!)

    @musicsuzuranbbc, you’re right, clicking ‘classic blue’ still results in a new color scheme, not quite the old ‘blue’ – and either way the map feature in stats is still in gray-to-black rather than shades of red, whether you pick “brights” or “blue”. I’ll try the new bright for a while. Glad to know how to change it if I get tired of it.

    @musicsuzuranbbc

    Just looked at it, I am sad to find out that I still can’t make it the way it was before. The option for the way I’ve been used to for a year now is completely gone, with the ‘classic blue’ not being the old one completely and now harder on my eyes, and the majenta one being the same.

    @ingridcc

    Unfortunately, I can only believe that this new change did this, because this was never a problem until they changed the schemes. (have tried both schemes, still can’t see the lines)

  • @thyunsuspicious

    I just tried adding a horizontal line to a post. As you mentioned, the line disappears in the (classic) editor, but appears in the post. I changed my editor to the new editor, and the line displayed properly there. So, for the moment, the best thing to do may be to use the new editor.

    I have already tagged this thread for staff to check, so they should have some more input soon. I’d be interested to hear what they have to say.

    The WordPress “designers” should have offered this change as an option and not force it, there are a lot of people who do not like this change, see comments.

    @musicsuzuranbbc

    Eugh. The ‘guten-whatever’ one? I can’t stand that thing. Makes it 10x harder to do something that wasn’t hard to do to begin with.

    @rewsteruk

    Definitely. I absolutely hate this new change (the new color schemes sort of hurt my eyes after a bit), and I would love to have the option to just go back to my nice color scheme. They say you can change it back, but that old ‘classic’ option is NOT the same.

  • Hi folks, as staff we do like to file feedback we’re getting. It’s really helpful if the complaints are specific, so thank you for the images showing a missing line.

    @thyunsuspicious
    , can you clarify which page you’re seeing that on? I’m guessing because you’re talking about the color scheme change, it’s somewhere in the Calypso admin area, but I have not been able to find it yet.

    If you’ll send a link to the page where you’re seeing that, that would be perfect. Also, if you have specific feedback about Gutenberg, let’s move that to another thread so it doesn’t get lost in the shuffle. Thank you!

    @supernovia

    Every page I edit that has a horizontal line like that does not show it when I’m editing. Only when I’m looking at the preview or the actual page (not in editor mode), will I see the line. Extremely frustrating as I have to guess whether or not it’s there.

    As for the color scheme change, I am assuming that is what made them invisible, as until this “forced color scheme change” happened, I’ve never had this problem. I would really like an option for the old blue/orange style, as then those who like the new can use it, and I can use my nice, easy-on-the-eyes blue/orange one.

    Just noting the bug report on the horizontal line here. :)

    Quite a bit of orange has been added to the Classic Blue scheme now! :)

    @torres126

    Hmm? It has? I guess I’ll check once I get home. Hope it looks like used to.

  • Unknown's avatar

    I see that that is true. It’s better. Now just lighten things up a bit and you will have it right again!

  • Thanks, @torres126 , for reporting that!

  • Unknown's avatar

    In case the designers are interested in purely aesthetic feedback on their recent color changes:

    On the stats page (in both of the two available color choices) the world map image that shows where the most views occurred now looks more like a map of plague deaths in that somber, gray-to-black color scheme.

    The old color scheme gave the views as shades of red, looked much more vibrant and positive.

  • Hi folks,

    Orange has been added back as the highlight color for Classic Blue, yes.

    @torres126
    , thanks for the link to that bug report re the horizontal line issue. @thyunsuspicious, our developers are working on this, and we’ll update here once it’s fixed. Thanks for the report.

    @guitarsophist

    Now just lighten things up a bit and you will have it right again!

    The main purpose for these changes was to increase contrast to make the dashboard easier for visually impaired users to use. The old brighter color scheme’s contrast ratios were too low, making it almost unuseable for some people, and that’s why we changed it to how it is now.

    There will be more color schemes coming soon, though. Please comment on https://en.blog.wordpress.com/2019/01/08/customize-your-wordpress-com-dashboard/ with what you’d like to see, as that’s where we’re collecting this type of feedback.

    That’s great feedback, thank you. I’ve relayed that to the team.

    The new colour scheme is dreadful and I fail to see how this is an improvement.

    I appreciate that it can be changed back but what a strange place to put the option (account setting) it would a lot more sense to have it included somewhere on the dashboard menu, for example with appearance or settings.

    I am way behind on browsers, my PC is old and only has old IE and your options change facility behind the gravitar is not available to me. Now I can see no stats at all and cannot make the change that I need.
