"Random posts" in Duster gives only pages, not posts
-
Few days ago I have noticed that the ?random command works only with pages, not with posts. The same applies for the Random post option in the Dashboard. The theme is Duster; with a different theme the ?random works alright so it may be a theme-specific bug.
Wanted to contact support directly but cannot find the link anymore so I am posting the issue here.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Duster is a very old theme and is no longer supported, so that could be the problem (though that’s only a guess).
I recommend you update to Twenty-Eleven, which is basically a newer version of duster. It looks the same, but supports all the newer features. You can see here for more information:

The problem is I have built a massive orientation help around my pages in Duster and switching to another theme would mean a big amount of rework I am not willing to put into it. The ?random command worked alright a week ago when I used it for the last time.

I’ll tag this for staff to follow up in case there’s something they can do, but you have to realise with a retired theme stuff will start breaking more and more often as time goes by.
Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when staff respond and be patient while waiting.

I have just found this same problem with my blog. The theme I am using is Typo and my blog is here http://agapintheclouds.wordpress.com/
Thanks

It just started happening on my blog, too, which is using the visual theme. The “?random” tag called random posts up until recently. Now the same code is calling random pages.

This thread has been tagged for staff, so please be patient for their response. If anyone else reading this has the same issue, please subscribe to the thread, but wait for staff to respond before you post yourself as each new reply moves this thread further back in the queue, meaning it will just take longer for staff to get to it and fix this issue.

I also see it on their blogs. On both @helar and @wildhairyhaggis’s blogs if I use the random post link it gives me pages instead of posts.I tested it on my own blog and there it gives posts as it should.

So, it turns out that if you have a static front page set up and use the random command, you will get pages.
We are looking into this to see if there is a more logical way to present it.

Hi there, if you have a static front page set, and have created a “blog” page to display your posts, you can use the random code at the end of the link to your blog page and it will display posts instead of pages.
Example mysite.wordpress.com/blog/?random

Thanks for figuring out the reason.@thesacredpath
Thanks for the workaround. Will make a note about that. -

I did.

That workaround don´t work for me. -
What does – “a “blog” page to display your posts” mean?
My menu bar displays links to different categories – Poetry, Stories etc, where the reader can click to see the latest post in a category, so I don’t understand the workaround.

@wildhairyhaggis
The “blog page” refers to a page that displays your main feed, i.e. all your posts in reverse-chronological order. You don’t appear to have a page like that – I only see static pages and category pages on your site.Try the following:
1) Create a new page. Title it “Blog” and publish it without adding any content. The URL for the page should be http://agapintheclouds.wordpress.com/2) Go to Settings ->Reading in the dashboard. Under the option “Front Page Displays” I assume you have it set to a static page and next to “Front Page” you have your current home page. Next to “Posts Page” select the page you just created. Save settings.
3) The new page might now appear in your menu, depending on your menu settings. If you don’t want it there, go to Appearance ->Menus and remove it from the custom menu.
4) You can now use that page’s URL and just add the ?random command like @thesacredpath suggested.

You also don’t appear to have a blog page set up, so also try the above steps. If you don’t have one, you might need to create a custom menu to prevent the blog page from appearing in your menu. See here for instructions on custom menus:
