Random users, am I getting hacked?
-
In my dashboard under Users –> all users is a list of people whom I have never added. They are all listed as a “Subscriber”. I can edit each one and make them a subscriber, contributor, editor, author or administrator. I don’t even know how these people got there? I never added them here? How did they get there?
There are 12 people listed, myself as the admin and 11 others who are “subscribers”.Please do not get the term “subscriber” confused. These are not the same subscribers who have signed up to receive notification and follow my blog. Any help?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Josh,
Are you referring to your self-hosted site, or your site hosted here at WordPress.com?
It appears as if you have questions about your self-hosted site, which I do not have access to investigate entirely.
Did these subscribers appear after you transferred from WordPress.com to WordPress.org?
Did you run your own follower migration, or did someone here assist you with it?
Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks very much.

Thank you for the reply. Yes, I am talking about my self-hosted wordpress site. Yes, these subscribers showed up over a period of three days. I was playing around in my dashboard and went to change some data on my user profile. There was nothing, then three days later, I went back in and had 11 other users, all listed as subscribers.
As I wrote this reply to you, I went back in and found that I now have 65 users listed: myself the administrator and 64 others! What the heck?I had the follower migration done a while back, (~ 4 months ago) through JetPack support. All of my email and wordpress followers transferred fine. This problem is only with users. Any thoughts?

Ok Josh, thanks!
The signup process is different on your self-hosted Jetpack site than it is on WordPress.com. You need to adjust a setting in your self-hosted site’s Dashboard in order to keep folks from signing up to be members of your site.
Go to Settings → General and adjust the “Membership” option so it no longer reads, “Anyone can register.”
When people are signing up to follow your site, they are inadvertently adding themselves as registered members.
I hope this helps! Let me know. Take care.

Great! Thank you!
So what happens to those people who became registered users? Should I just delete them?

That’s a great question. You don’t want to lose them as followers. My own tact would be to drop them an email, and ask them to follow your site again. Then delete them as users :)
