Ransomware

I was sent ransomware today by someone with an upwork.com email address. I’ve notified them and they’re on it. By coincidence (?) or response, or ?, I tried to log on to my site and was put through a two-step authentication process registration that I’d not requested. Did I get hacked, or is WordPress watching out for me, or neither?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • @shepherdsiegel thanks for letting us know. Two step authentication is a good idea, especially if you’ll keep a copy of your codes in a safe place. We do try to encourage it, though we won’t force you to do enable it. I’m guessing we just have a new prompt about that. It wouldn’t be related to the email you saw.

THANK YOU, supernovia . . . do tell, is there anything WordPress can or does do to monitor anybody monkeying around with my website?

  • Your site is not hosted on our servers, so we have no control over it at all. WordPress.com is not the same thing as the open source WordPress software you’re using – we’re a hosting provider and only have control over sites on our servers.

Your best option would be to contact your hosting provider. The WordPress software does not include this type of monitoring, but your hosting plan might include security logging of some sort.

Otherwise you’d need a security plugin to do this type of monitoring for you. Jetpack, which you’re using to connect your site to your WordPress.com account, does include some logging at My Site ->Tools ->Activity, though it only logs a limited number of events on the free version of the plugin.
