Rapid drop in stats-why?

  • Unknown's avatar

I am blogging from the Middle East ( that may be relevent ).
Over the past week my stats have dropped RAPIDLY. I mean from a three month period of 700-900 hits a DAY to 100-250.
Now i have been posting just as regularly and nothing much has changed in content.
    Is anyone else experiencing this?
    Is WordPress adjusting stats?
Were the stats falsely high in the first place?
    VERY confused.
    Thanks all and happy blogging

Please don’t post the same question multiple times. If anyone has an answer, they’ll give it to the first thread.

  • Unknown's avatar

Well so sorry Ros for offending you. I am not an idiot and posted twice by accident- we have a ‘refresh’ problem here with our internet connection. However, if multiple posts irk you so much, don’t read them.
Have you anything more constructive to add?

  • Unknown's avatar

You posted three times within a short space of time. Usually when that happens it indicates that a poster is spamming the forum, so a polite request is given asking them not to. This is a constructive way in which the wordpress.com forums are maintained in a user-friendly fashion. Multiple threads on the same topic are confusing (when conflicting answers are given in different places) and frustrating (since they fill up the front page of the forum, pushing other questions down the queue).

If it happened by accident, there’s no need to take offence or to reply rudely to a polite request.

    Just delete it.
    Are you a Mod?

  • teachthemasses, where was your traffic coming from before? You might have been de-linked from a popular site that was sending traffic your way; or dropped in the search rankings. It’s common for a site to rank fairly well in Google when it is new, then drop significantly after a month or two. That’s a Google quirk.

Thanks telly- it has also happened a friend who began blogging at the same time and from the same area. We wondered if it was anything to do with censorship here.

  • Unknown's avatar

No, I’m a volunteer who freely gives time and effort to help people in the forums, like 90% of the helpful people you’ll find here. We don’t have the power to delete threads which is just one of the reasons we ask people not to post repeatedly.

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi teachthemasses. I don’t think rosclarke was trying to be rude to you. I’ve been here two years and am always amazed at the patience and kindness of the forum volunteers to help people out. It isn’t an exaggeration to say that spammers do come here and do post repeatedly sometimes, which is annoying to not just the volunteers but the other regulars here. Another thing we should all try do when we’ve been answered and assisted, is to mark the threads we start as resolved… and then the volunteers know they don’t need to keep reading them. They give tons of their own time freely, to help the rest of us. We shouldn’t take offense to their polite requests or tips on how we should use the forums best, because they’re only “doing business” and trying to keep things running smoothly in here. It’s a big job. I’m quite sure rosclarke was not calling you an idiot. At least I didn’t see it that way.

Hits come from more than just your content. Other than what tellyworth suggested, perhaps it’s your tags, or your titles, or something extraneous? I generally get from 1200 – 2000 hits a day with occasional times where I’ll get into the 3000-6000 hits and much, much less frequently, in the 10,000 range. I notice that when I pay attention to my tags and my titles, and when I pay attention to what words and terms are in the very first paragraph of the post, I get more hits. Alt tagging your images well will also add more, so really, losing a few hundred hits could be a combination of smaller things all adding up too.

I also notice that the internet seems to have a ‘flow’ where some weeks, no one seems to be doing well save for the big guns. Maybe it’s the moon?

And then there’s that whole “the stats are borked” idea, which sure makes me feel better when I suddenly do crappy. ;-)

    Good luck.

It’s really impossible to help you when you don’t give us the link for your blog. As well, when you lecture someone who really is only trying to clue you in on the way to get help from the forum, you lower the incentive all volunteers have to help you. Ros is never rude in my experience, and there’s no reason for you to start lecturing her as if she had been.

Sorry raincoaster yestrday was a bad day- niece’s ex boyfriend lands in jail for not appearing at trial and we get landed with trouble, then son breaks finger.
Apologies to all I insulted- you caughte me at a particularly weak moment.

But prob still not resolved and slightly suspicious as today ( after my post here ) the stats shoot up to 1000 again.

  • ttm – there is no problem to resolve. Your page views are dependent on people visiting your blog. There are any number of things that might cause that number to jump or drop suddenly (such as the quality and subject of your posts, and the quality and subject of posts on competing blogs).

Looking at your stats page I don’t see a sudden drop at all, but a gradual decline over the past 2 weeks. Take a look at your referrers to see the reason for today’s jump.

    @teachthemasses,

Also by linking your name to your blog it will serve the purposes…
If you need to ask a support question in the forum then it will make it easier for the volunteers to see what blogging platform your using & will aide them in giving you a more accurate answer to your question.

telly- I think the drop is rapid if you look at the past few months.
    But thanks for your help.
I think the sudden rise today is due to one post about the UK couple in Dubai who were jailed.

  • ttm, yes, that’s the reason for your sudden jump today. The popularity of many topics is fleeting, jumps and drops are normal. If you’re still writing about the same things that were popular a few months back, you can expect to see a gradual decline in visits.

  • Unknown's avatar

Similarly experienced this sudden drop, on http://windpowerlaw.wordpress.com. Am wondering if it was too much tagging and categorizing (a new post covered a lot of ground, hence increased tags), or if because there was less original content in that post than usual. But as a consequence, I am getting about a third the traffic, if that, and am not showing up on any of the searches that I normally do show up on. Very curious!

As a PS, here’s recent search engine results. Color me confused. 10/14 and 10/13 are much more common than the latest drop. [sorry for the length of this post]
