I wanted to change my username, but the name is already taken, however your system has the used name listed as ‘reserved’ status (unregistered). How do I get it?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You don’t. When we register a username account the matching blog URL is reserved for our future use. It cannot be obtained by anyone other than the person who has registered the matching username account.

Username accounts are not deleted, so we cannot be impersonated and have our reputation affected by anyone registering the same username in the future. http://en.support.wordpress.com/deleting-accounts/

But the point is that I am the REAL business entity who wants to use the proper spelling instead of a variant. There must be some way to release it because I ended up using the variant because the name I wanted was already reserved. Is there a manger or higher up I can contact about this?

If and only if you have registered the matching username account then log in under the correct username account and as the blog is reserved for you and you will register it after logging in under the correct username account.
    https://signup.wordpress.com/signup/?user=1

However, if you changed your username then the blog URL will not be available for use under the new username account.

I will type modlook into the sidebar tags on this thread for a Staff follow-up. Hi @f3rr3lux, a reserved message means just that. If you’ll tell us the username you’re after, I’ll double check it for you, though.

That one is definitely taken by someone. If it was you, do you remember about how long ago you signed up to use it?

Taken, but never used for years making it an abandoned account. I don’t recall signing up with it. Someone may have beat me to using that name at random. I tried logging in using the name under old email accounts I still have access to, but don’t use as much, plus what passwords I would have used at the time, but no dice. I even used the forgot password feature, but to no success. There are old accounts from many many years ago I no longer have access to. Can you tell whether that ferrelux account was open under a USA IP? More specifically New York?

We don’t disclose personal information. I will reach out to the account owner though.

Sometimes, a person from a foreign country who browse American forums tend to pick up on certain names & capture the account first then never really use it. The policy of other online platforms is to have a no login/usage time period where the account no longer is active & someone else can possibly use the name now. I imagine wordpress should have a similar policy because people are signing up just to hold the name but never use the account for YEARS. Perhaps you can suggest this to your bosses at WordPress. Let me know if anything comes from you contacting the person. It may just be an abandoned account with your email bouncing back after a while. I’d love to get my original intended username (ferrelux) PLUS my other one (lhisa) since that is also reserved by I guess a similar situation where that too is there for years unused. Thank you.

The policy here regarding reserved URLs and usernames is exactly what I stated above and it is unlikely that it will be charged any time soon, if at all.

I suggest you register your own custom domain. You can register a new domain through WordPress.com and have it connect automatically quickly and easily. See here: http://support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/register-domain/

Note also that you can change your display name rather than changing your username.

Once you change your username you will not be able to change it back and the old name will not be available for you or anyone to use. If you just want to show your name differently please only change your Display Name. https://en.support.wordpress.com/change-your-username/#change-display-name-nickname

yes, TimeThief, I know of those options. I have my display name right & the plan was to finish building the site then change my domain over. Thanks.

. I have my display name right

    Good. :)

It does not matter at all what the underlying .wordpress.com blog URL is when one is domain mapping. Domain mapping results in a seamless redirect from the same content under the old URLs to the new URLs.

I know, I’ve done this already for many years trying out different platforms with my content. I KNOW how the process works. I’m now using my http://www.ferrelux.com elsewhere on another platform. I signed up years ago on wordpress but in the past installed the program under my server/hosting companies then. For 2017, I’ll be changing over the look & feel of my current website & decided to try out the hosted wordpress in this manner, so I wouldn’t upset my current hosting right now with a re-mapping with all my detailed site menu & other content that people are accustomed to is still being built here.

Your ARE helpful TimeThief, if I weren’t already informed, that bit of info you gave before is useful. I had in mind what to do, my only concern was in username cosmetics to hold (ferrelux) & (lhisa) like I do on other platforms. I’ll just work with what I have though due to wordpress policy if I can’t be assigned the names. And I appreciate both your & Supernovia’s efforts. Thanks

Thanks for the suggestion there. I can tell you we won’t be able to take someone else’s username from them, even if it appears to you that they are not using it. But I did reach out to the owner and will let you know if we hear back.
