Re-Designing From Scratch

About a year ago the company I work for hired someone to design a website using WordPress. In my opinion it is not a very good website. My boss said I could re-design the site, but I dont want to ‘erase’ or change anything and not be able to return it to its original state. I also noticed the wordpress interface for the current site looks much different than the interface I see when I log into my new free account. I just created a ‘free’ wordpress account so that I can re-create the website wihtout leaving our actual site out of commission. If I re-create the site using a free account, can I just migrate the layout into our current site/domain?
