Re-direct
-
Hi there,
We have been using wordpress for over two years now. Our blog – http://www.joyoftaxlaw.com, has been featured on Freshly Pressed, averages around 2,000 views per month, has close to 1,000 followers, and is really a source of pride for the interns and employees who helped develop it.
The blog’s primary purpose was to re-direct traffic to our main website. Unfortunately, while the blog itself has been very successful, few readers travel over to our main website. Our site has undergone several changes and now has its own blog roll. We’ve been thinking of moving our blog over to the main site since it makes little sense to have two blogs, or to maintain a blog separate from our main website, but as far as we can tell, doing so would eliminate our strong WordPress following.
I was hoping someone could elaborate on the re-direct option from WordPress, or provide any other recommendations on how to handle this issue. Is it possible to re-direct individual posts? Would you recommend removing the dates from old posts so it doesn’t look like old content? Should we eliminate the older posts altogether? Is it wise to just delete some of the more popular posts and paste them onto our main website?
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.. Thanks in advance!

Hi there,
It looks like your main site is jdkatz.com. So, to summarize, you would like to move your blog from joyoftaxlaw.com to jdkatz.com. Is that correct? If so, the redirect option would work quite well. Here’s how it would work:
1. You would export all of your content from joyoftaxlaw.com following the instructions here:
http://www.en.support.wordpress.com/export
2. You can then import it to your main site following the instructions here:
http://www.en.support.wordpress.com/export
If you would like, you can set-up a subdomain (blog.jdkatz.com). I can help provide further instructions if you want to go this route.
3. You will want to make sure the permalinks for the posts are the same on both blogs. For WordPress.com blogs, the permalink for a post is always the Day and Name like this:
http://myblog.wordpress.com/2014/02/27/sample-post/
So, on jdkatz.com, you would want to navigate to Dashboard -> Settings -> Permalinks and change it to the Day and Name option as shown here:
4. Then, you can set-up the redirect from jdkatz.wordpress.com to jdkatz.com. This would redirect any URL like jdkatz.wordpress.com/2014/02/10/sample-post/ or joyoftaxlaw.com/2014/02/10/sample-post/ to jdkatz.com/2014/02/10/sample-post/. Does that make sense?
At that point, all of your content would be available on your main site and any URLs would automatically redirect readers there. Then, I can transfer your current subscribers from joyoftaxlaw.com to jdkatz.com so they receive updates from your main site.
Let me know how that sounds, and if you have any additional questions on how it would work!
