Hi there,
If you map your domain to WordPress.com, the domain is still registered with your original domain registrar but it is pointed to your site hosted here at WordPress.com.
I see that you purchased domain mapping for the domain tamrawhitney.com. To finish mapping your domain here, you’ll need to change your name servers to the following:
- NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
- NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
- NS3.WORDPRESS.COM
If you’re not sure how, you’ll need to contact your registrar for assistance.
Once the name servers are pointed to WordPress.com, you can use your domain with your site here. Please let me know if you have any questions about this!

Oh no!, I wanted hosting as well, how much more would it be for hosting and could I get a refund for the mapping? Sorry, for the mix up. Tamra

Hi Tamra,
The domain tamrawhitney.com was originally registered with GoDaddy on January 29, 2011. Did you register the domain then?
If you did, your domain mapping upgrade will let you use the domain with your WordPress.com site. Your site will be hosted here at WordPress.com. (We can’t accept incoming domain transfers, so your domain will still be registered with GoDaddy and pointed to WordPress.com.)
If you didn’t register the domain with GoDaddy, then I’m afraid it’s unavailable for use. You’ll need to pick another domain name to use with your blog. If you didn’t register the domain, let me know, and I can either issue you a refund or give you credit toward purchasing another domain upgrade. The domain mapping upgrade is $13, and if you want to register a new domain it is $18.00 per domain ($25.00 for .me and .co domains).

Yes I did register with GoDaddy on that date and Siteground has been hosting my Joomla website up to now, but I now want to go with WordPress and was concerned that WP would not be hosting my site. So correct me if I’m wrong; by mapping my domain to WordPress I would then need to reconstruct my site using WP templates or would my website look the same? Thanks, Tamra

Hi Tamra,
You will need to reconstruct your site here at WordPress.com if you want to have it hosted here.
Your domain is completely separate from your website content. Your domain points to your website hosting provider, and the hosting provider is what holds all of your website’s content. If you point your domain to a new hosting provider, you can keep using the same domain but your content isn’t automatically moved to the new hosting provider. The same domain will show your new website at your new hosting provider.
If you’re interested, you can learn more about how this works here: Domains 101: Mapping It Out
Right now, you have purchased the domain mapping upgrade for tamrawhitney.com, but the domain is still pointed at your old hosting provider. That means you are still seeing the website hosted at your old hosting provider when you visit your domain.
If you want to use your domain here at WordPress.com, you will need to update the domain settings so it points to WordPress.com. Your domain will then show the content that you have on your WordPress.com site. (It won’t look the same as your old site, because that content is hosted on your old hosting provider.) You can use your WordPress.com dashboard to create your site here — that’s what will be displayed at your domain once you finish the mapping process.
