Re-directing domain names
-
Greetings!
I am new to WordPress, and there is a topic about domain names that I don’t quite understand.
I own a domain name that starts with “www” and ends with “.com.br”.
Is it possible to have it re-direct to my WordPress address?
For example:
If they type http://www.mydomainname.com.br, can I have it re-direct to mydomainname.wordpress.com ?
Thank you so much for your help!

Yes you can use your personal domain with your WordPress.COM blog.
About $ 12– US if your domain is already registered. It is a bit more intimidating looking than it actually is. The Staff will also help if you have problems.
Basics are:
1) Point Domain to WordPress.COM name servers
2) While logged into your blog map your blog to the name. For more info: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/

Thank you so much for your answer, auxclass!
I noticed that it said something that you cannot use the www part of the address. So if someone types http://www.mydomainname.com.br (assuming I already did the mapping), will it still take me to the wordpress.com address? Or will they have to type the address without the initial www ?

Either should work.
There is some technical reason that I saw about the www and I just pitched the www part and said “magic” – been working fine for me ever since.
Good luck

Thank you for your answer, mike99362! I just not quite sure what you meant by the www part. Does it work when you type it in the address bar or not?

I get to my mapped blogs with or without the www when I type the name in. //www.my-site.com or //my-site.com both end up on the same page.
When I finally get to the blog the WordPress.COM (or the internet) has stripped the www from the address bar in my browser.

Do not put it in your domain management on the dashboard. But it will work if you type in your browser bar.
