Re-registering Domain…

  • Unknown's avatar

Long story short I had a pending cancellation for my website and when I checked my email it said I had to confirm the cancellation. However I decided I’m just going to transfer the domain to wordpress.org. I thought that as long as I didn’t hit the “confirm cancellation” button my website would be safe. I didn’t confirm it, I deleted the email but my domain is gone and it isn’t available now.

Someone is helping me get back my domain. But I asked him if I could just wait for it to cancel (canceled the same day purchased) and register it with a new host. He said it would take 80 days. I read on another support post on here (someone with the same issue) that it would take their domain 3-4 days to be available after canceling it the same day as purchased. I really do not want it through wordpress.com because then my process is going to take longer and cost more than planned. Just realized I made a huge mistake.

Also, why if my domain expires, someone is able to register it and take it from me the moment it expires but I have to wait 80 days after it accidentally got canceled to get it back?

    Hi there!

Also, why if my domain expires, someone is able to register it and take it from me the moment it expires but I have to wait 80 days after it accidentally got canceled to get it back?

This is actually not a WordPress.com-mandated procedure. It’s the process set out by ICANN, the governing body of domain registrations. (https://www.icann.org/resources/pages/expired-2013-05-03-en)

When you cancel, the domain is released from your account, and goes back on the market once your registrar allows.

However, if your domain expires, you are given a grace period to save your domain from permanently loss. This process can last 75-90 days, and was put in place to save users from permanently losing a domain they want to maintain.

I hope that answers your questions. It looks like Jerry is helping you get that domain back, as you requested.

Please let us know if you have any other questions. Thanks much!
