Reactivating my domain that was ‘deleted’ not expired last week

    Last week, I non-renewed my paid WP.com plan and domain name. I was making a quick, panicky decision about the renewal and decided to non-renew.

    But now that he is well, I am thinking more clearly and realize that the chat rep said the domain would be ‘deleted.’ This meant nothing to me at the time, but I’m getting going again, and want to register this domain at my new host (ready to go to self-hosted), but it isn’t available anywhere. I thought it would just be free to buy, because it was deleted at WordPress.com, but ICANN shows it as not expiring until a year from now.

    I guess deleted is different from expired, but where I could reactivate? Basically, no one owns this now, so?

    No idea how to contact WordPress help about this now that I am not a paying member with access to live chat. Thank you in advance for any advice!

    I just realized I left out the fact that my husband had COVID symptoms at the time and couldn’t get tested. Perhaps no one is reading my post anyway! :) How odd that we cannot edit our posts here.

    I’m glad to hear your husband is better. These are stressful times for sure!

    Are you speaking of ieltswritingcoach.com? That domain has been cancelled, yes. It was only due to expire on 14 April.

    We can still get the domain back for you at this point, but since the cancellation it has already gone into redemption. That means we have to pay the registry that controls it a $80 fee to get it back, in addition to the renewal fee that was refunded. Let me know if you agree to that, and I can get the recovery process started.

    Alternatively you can wait for redemption to run its course, and try to buy the domain once it’s released. Redemption for this domain should end on 24 April, and it should become available for registration again a few days later. However, there’s no guarantee you’ll be able to get it back that way, as anyone else will also be able to register it once it’s released. So there’s always a risk that someone else will buy it before you can buy it again.
