  How do I get my blog to display only an except of my post on the main page and then a link to the full article?
  Is there a setting for this on my dashboard?

  Yes. In the Editor, there is a symbol on the top line that looks like a square, with a dotted line beneath it, then another square beneath that. Mine is next to the abc symbol. Simply insert that where you want the break.
