Read More Display issue.

On my most recent post, when I add content with the list feature (bullet points and numbers) it automatically removes it from the generated excerpt. While all my older posts do not do this. What is happening?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hello there,

Happy to help you with this.

Are you referring to the except seen on the homepage? If yes, It looks like the content is structured slightly differently as there looks to be an extra heading (filling), which might provide some clues as to what is happening there.

Yes, but in previous posts I have used multiple headings (H2/H3) and also used bullets/list that didn’t remove the bulleted/list content.

For some reason, it’s only removing bulleted content/number list. It does not show any of the ingredients that are bulleted or the numbered list. So it doesn’t show a “read more” button in the excerpt for my most recent post unless I manually type out numbers/add bullets via character code.

This is an older post that I did in the past that is fine with this same multi headline structure/bullet/numbered list (https://thevegantouch.wordpress.com/2022/04/12/recipe-portobello-pot-pie/) all of that content shows up in the excerpt fine.

Side note: If I simply add a manual excerpt it also does not show the “read more” button in the excerpt view on my main page.

  • Hi there,

This is an older post that I did in the past that is fine with this same multi-headline structure/bullet/numbered list (https://thevegantouch.wordpress.com/2022/04/12/recipe-portobello-pot-pie/) all of that content shows up in the excerpt fine.

I have been able to confirm on my test site that this appears to be a theme bug that affects newly published posts, and also affects older posts that are edited. I refreshed the excerpt on your portobello pot pie recipe which now also has the same issue to confirm.

I’ve reported this to our theme team so they can take a closer look and address. I don’t have a timeline on when this will happen since they still need to investigate, but we’re happy to update you here when we know more.

Out of curiosity, is there a reason that you do not add an introductory paragraph (before the recipe) on your posts? The reason I ask is because it’s generally seen as helpful to your Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and will help Google to better scan and rank your site in search results. You may want to consider adding a brief bit of teaser text to each post before the recipe both to introduce readers to the dish you are making (and what is great about it) as well as to help your site show up more in internet searches.

We have more info here on how you can format your posts to get shown in search results here: https://wordpress.com/dailypost/2016/03/10/six-seo-factors-you-should-know/

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

  • Hi again,

In reporting this bug to our team, I noted a workaround you can use to get the list text to display in your excerpts correctly. To do this you will want to add a Classic Block (instead of list block) and then in the toolbar for the classic block choose the list format option and create your list as usual.

This is difficult to explain in words, so I recorded a quick video to show you how to do it.

You can view the video at this link

Since the excerpt cuts off automatically after a certain amount, you should only need to use this trick with the first list in your posts, and can use standard list blocks for the other parts of your post further down. Hope this helps!

First, let me thank you for taking the time to offer this work around. It fixed the problem and I hope (at least) the bug doesn’t cause the “theme team” too much trouble. That is to say, the aforementioned posts are now using this classic block option, and it is working splendidly.

As to answer your previous question, I did not add a paragraph before my recipes on purpose. While I know that limits my traffic from a SEO perspective, I absolutely loathe the novel a person has to scroll through before getting to a recipe in most blogs.

It is infuriating to be cooking and then play “scrolling hopscotch” because you cannot remember how many cups to add. I may have strong opinions on this matter. I am trying to provide a “no-frills” experience that at some point will woo the few (very few) who stumble upon my blog.

That being said, I appreciate the helpful nature of your suggestion, but will carry on like the stubborn mule that I am.

    PS – I <3 Totoro.
