Read More tag doesn't work in email notification

  • Unknown's avatar

I have been using the “Read More” tag for over five years to truncate each post in both the email notification and the presentation in the blog. Used to work fine. Today, for the first time, it didn’t work in the email notification (people got the full post) but does work in the blog (only the first para. is shown).
The post is here [in Hebrew…]: https://amirlicht.wordpress.com/2020/07/29/180/
I looked up related support topics, but they don’t seem to help. Here: https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/i-want-my-followers-to-receive-their-email-with-the-full-content/
    Please help.

Hi @alicht2014 Staff will reply concerning why the “Read More” tag stopped working for you in emails.

AFAIK- for as long as I’ve been on WordPress.com, it’s been your site’s Reading Settings that has controlled the length of a post sent to your followers by email.

MySites>Settings>Writing>Feed Settings>Limit feed to excerpt only

    https://wordpress.com/support/settings/reading-settings/

    Hi justjenifer,
Re: Reading Settings – In my settings, there is no “excerpt only” option. My Settings show “Full text” and “Summary”.
Right now, my settings are set for “For each post in a feed, include Full text”. The point is that I haven’t touched those settings at all. Could it be that WordPress somehow reset that option?
In any event, if I set to “Summary” will the email notifications include only the text down to the “Read More” tag?
    Much thanks.

Hello again, I’ve always had that set to “Summary” so could not tell you if there’s been a change to how it functions.

As far as the length of the summary, I’m not certain whether it takes the “read more” tag into consideration, so let’s wait for Staff to reply here.

  • Yes, the Summary option will limit emails to the smaller excerpt.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Thanks.
Just to clarify – ALL the text and ONLY the text down to the “Read More” tag will be emailed?
And out of curiosity – How or why did that change just now?

  • There is a set length to the summary. If the Read More tag winds up within that length, that’s where the excerpt will stop. If not, only a portion of the excerpt will be sent.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Aha. Thanks. That’s important.
Can I adjust that length? Where?
And why did things change suddenly this time? I haven’t touched anything.

  • The length cannot be adjusted.

I also don’t see when your setting changed, but it definitely shouldn’t have been changed without you changing it.

  • Unknown's avatar

    This is very odd indeed.
So one last question: what is the length of the summary?`
    Thanks!

  • The automatic excerpt length is 55 words.

    Thanks, Kokkieh.
    Will try and see.

Hi folks, According to @alicht2014 his settings didn’t change.

I have been using the “Read More” tag for over five years to truncate each post in both the email notification and the presentation in the blog. Used to work fine. Today, for the first time, it didn’t work in the email notification (people got the full post) but does work in the blog (only the first para. is shown).

Further along he said his feed setting was set at “full text” and he didn’t change anything.

    @alicht2014
Post back here if you continue to encounter this issue.

    Hi justjennifer,
    Thanks for following up.
I have now changed the setting to from “Full text” to “Summary” in light of the above advice, but this is not ideal and the whole thing is a mystery.
Until last Wednesday, all emails were truncated right at the “Read More” tag, regardless of length, which was nearly always more than 55 words. See, e.g., the post of last Sunday – https://amirlicht.wordpress.com/2020/07/26/179/. The first paragraph is 80 words, and the email notification included the full first para.
This the better setting for me – namely, setting at Full text + using Read More to truncate the email notification.
Can I still do that? Will WordPress ignore the tag as it did last time??

Hello again, I do not know. As a volunteer, I have no way to know what may have changed that would have recently affected your subscriber emails and whether it will continue to affect future emails.

As I mentioned in my earlier reply, I’ve always had that feed setting set to “summary.”

    Sorry I couldn’t help further.

    Hello all,
It appears that somebody else has experienced the same problem. See: https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/dont-want-subscribers-to-recieve-full-post-in-email-notification/
The solution of a 55-word summary is not good. Like that other user, I want to keep using the Read More tag to cut email notification manually at the end of the first paragraph – just like in the blog page display – as I and that other user have done so far.
With apologies for pestering, please look into this problem.
    Thanks

  • Hi @alicht2014, that other post was from 9 years ago. I don’t think we’ve had any recent changes, but we can certainly dig into it.

Would you be willing to let us know the last time you were able to send an excerpt with more than 55 words? Could you get a screenshot of that email and upload it to https://wordpress.com/media so we can dig in a bit further?

    Hi supernovia,
Thanks. Will do and note here when it’s done.

    Hi,
Yes, I noticed that that other support request is 9 years old. I flagged it because it looks exactly like what happened now.
    Here goes:

    29 July 2020 post: https://amirlicht.wordpress.com/2020/07/29/180/
    29 July 2020 email notification: 29 July 2020 email notification.PNG
This is a bad one – the email shows the full text. Note that because the blog is in Hebrew, the text becomes garbled whenever there is a mix of Hebrew and English.

    26 July 2020 post: https://amirlicht.wordpress.com/2020/07/26/179/
    26 July 2020 email notification: 26 July 2020 email notification.PNG
This is a good one – the email shows only the first paragraph, until the Read More tag.

    26 June 2020 post: https://amirlicht.wordpress.com/2020/06/26/178/
    26 June 2020 email notification: 26 June 2020 email notification.PNG
This is another good one – the email shows only the first paragraph, until the Read More tag.

All the previous emails worked well with the Read More tag after a first paragraph that was more than 55 words. Let me know if you’d like more samples.
    Thanks

    Hi again,
One last clarification: All of the above posts were posted when the reading settings were set to Full text. I changed to Summary only yesterday, and I might change back to Full text because the 55-word summary is not good enough.
