Reader Could NOT Subscribe

  • Unknown's avatar

Notifications are only sent if someone subscribes via email or via the WordPress reader — if someone subscribes via RSS, you don’t get a notification.

What happens when someone clicks on the RSS link is that the contents of your blog’s RSS feed are sent to the person’s browser. Depending on how the browser is set up, one of three things can happen:

    1. It can ask the person which RSS reader (Google Reader, Feedly, etc.) they want to use, and then add the RSS feed to the list of feeds being watched by that reader.
    2. It can add the RSS feed to the list of feeds watched by the person’s default RSS reader (possibly asking the person to confirm).
    3. It can just display the raw XML.

So I’m guessing that when TT subscribed, she successfully added the feed to her RSS reader (but you didn’t get an email because none is sent when that happens), and when your friend subscribed, their browser just displayed the raw XML. If your friend doesn’t already use an RSS reader, they may be better off getting posts by mail.

    @laurasbadideas
Thank you so much for clarifying that. I really appreciate it.

Notifications are only sent if someone subscribes via email or via the WordPress reader — if someone subscribes via RSS, you don’t get a notification.

At all? Not even after 24, 48 hours? But the follower count goes up accordingly? After TT subscribed, my follower count did not rise.

And I echo the thanks for the detailed explanation.

    Here’s what I know:

    1. If someone subscribes by hitting the “follow” button in the WordPress Reader, that counts towards your follower count (and you get notifications).
    2. If someone subscribes via email, that counts towards your follower count (and you get notifications).
    3. If someone clicks the RSS link and subscribes using an external RSS reader like Google Reader or Feedly, that does not count and you don’t get notifications (I think the reason for this is that WordPress has no idea whether you’ve confirmed the subscription in your reader, or whether you’ve unsubscribed later, etc.).
    4. If someone clicks the RSS link and subscribes using the WordPress reader, I don’t know what happens.

Seems no. 4 should affect the follower count.

But the issue still stands: TT flagged my problem for Staff because she saw she was not able to subscribe via the Follow by Email link on my home page. I hope I hear back on this. =( Thank you.

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m guessing it would — it would make sense that any subscriptions managed by WordPress would be counted.

I hope you get the email subscription problem sorted soon.

    Update:

About 36 hours ago, Gia at (email visible only to moderators and staff) (not a WPser) subscribed via email and I still have not gotten email notification. She did not even raise my follower count in my Stats. But she promptly got this notice to confirm:

    http://us-mg5.mail.yahoo.com/neo/launch?.rand=75ri5qk42q99o

AND she received my Shine On Award post.
    ====================

I did nOt get email notification of Elena’s, Doris’, irishdragon’s follow but found them in my stats list yesterday.
    http://elenaselivan.com/
    http://en.gravatar.com/imapoet4him
    http://en.gravatar.com/wingedfire

Elena let me know she subscribed via email.

I did get notice of Ryan’s follow
    http://urbanwallart.wordpress.com/portfolio-images/
and of others who I believe clicked the follow + sign in their reader and they raised my Stats.

I want to provide clear updates and clarifications to help you help me. Gia was not clear with me. She neglected to confirm her follow. I got word of her email follow promptly just now once she did it right. So you can ignore my confusion over her subscription.

The rest of my last update (not having gotten word on bloggers’ follow via email) stands.

I woke to learn myinterestquotes is following me

    http://mypinterestquotes.tumblr.com/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=html&utm_campaign=new_followers&utm_term=from_tumblelog

but s/he didn’t raise my tumblr follow count and therefore did not impact my aggregate follow count on my home page. myinterestquotes shows up on my tumblr list of followers and raised the count there.

@dipumpkin: As there is a lot of information here, can you let me know exactly what you need help with?

To answer a few of your inquiries:

Your Tumblr count will not instantly update on your WordPress.com stats page when you get a new follower on Tumblr. The count should be accurate after 24 hours. Is your count not accurate?

With regards to email-only followers – you will get a notification when someone follows your blog via email only after the user confirms the follow via a link in the email that is sent.

I hope that clarifies things! Let me know if you have any other questions.

Hi csonnek, I’ve extracted the issues that have persisted since last wk:

    1) First, someone tried following thru the link of my blog he got through email. A bunch of code popped up instead. (This was what prompted the thread).

    2) So Timethief did a test-follow. She reported:
I have subscribed using the follow blog link under 2 different email accounts and have not received a notification at either address. I’ll tag this thread for Staff assistance. I used the follow blog link as it is for those who do not have WordPress.com accounts and as I was not logged into WordPress.com.

I never got word of her follow either, even when she said following through the RSS link on my blog was easy.

    2) Then, it seemed I started getting word of some follows. But still not getting notice of all – apparently of those who subscribe by email, though they ARE raising my follower count.

I did nOt get email notification of their follow but found them in my stats list:
    http://elenaselivan.com/
    http://en.gravatar.com/imapoet4him
    http://en.gravatar.com/wingedfire
    http://johnadavid.wordpress.com/

Elena let me know she subscribed via email.

    3) myinterestquotes hasn’t raised my tumblr follow count well past 24 hrs and therefore never impacted my aggregate follow count on my home page. myinterestquotes shows up on my tumblr list of followers and raised the count there.

Something’s not been right. Would you do a test-follow (and of course unfollow me after 48 hours of clear data and results)? Try following by email off my home page? Are you able to fiddle around inside the back-end of my blog? Look at the coding? I used to get word of all follows. And there is obviously a disconnect with tumblr.

    Thank you.

    Thanks for that information.

    1) First, someone tried following thru the link of my blog he got through email. A bunch of code popped up instead. (This was what prompted the thread).

Do you have a screenshot or a copy of what that code was? Without that, I really can’t answer what happened or why it happened.

    2. You will not get a notification of a new follower if they follow your RSS feed as mentioned earlier. Without knowing what email addresses @timethief used to sign up, I can’t check to see if she’s still listed as being unconfirmed in the system or when the follower confirmation emails would’ve been sent out. As I mentioned above, you would not get a notification of a new follower until they confirm they want to follow.

Then, it seemed I started getting word of some follows. But still not getting notice of all – apparently of those who subscribe by email, though they ARE raising my follower count.

From our support doc on email notifications: http://en.support.wordpress.com/email-notifications/

“if a new follower is logged out of WordPress.com, an email notification will not be sent to the blog admin email address”

So you wouldn’t necessarily receive an email for every new follower to your blog. This would occur if someone is logged out of WordPress.com, but uses their email address associated with their WordPress.com account to follow your blog.

Regarding Tumblr, your followers list over there is not public so I can’t see what your current count is supposed to be. I show 5 followers on your stats page currently. If that total is incorrect, please try disconnecting your connection to Tumblr and reconnect:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/publicize/#tumblr

    I hope that clarifies things.

    1. Can’t show you the code.
    2. I continue to not get email notif of new follows – I’ll just go with the explanations you provided.
    3. Just now, I found my Tumblr count finally matching the list of followers on the actual Tumblr site. Took a few days.

Thank you for hanging in there with me. Really. =)
