Reader Crashes and Subscription Issues
-
Hello!
Firstly, using Google Chrome, the reader was very sluggish; but starting today, every time I open it, the browser crashes. (According to the task manager, the memory maxed out, and this is only happening in the reader, on my manage subscriptions, etc. Pages in my /admin panel is fine.) I removed three apps that I thought may be causing the problem (Grammerly, AdblockPlus, and Pixlr) but it didn’t help at all. Interestingly, everything works fine on FireFox…
Secondly, as a result of the first problem, I tried to reduce the amount of posts showing up in the reader by unfollowing a few people, and I accidentally unfollowed someone that I didn’t intend to, and now it won’t let me refollow. I even went to the WordPress site itself (outside the Reader) and clicked the follow pop-up and it told me that I am following, but it isn’t working. I’ve had problems for the past few months with this, but I can usually get around it by following via email and then changing my email settings so it won’t email me, but this blog doesn’t have that option.
Are there any options that I could have accidentally clicked to cause these issues, and is there a way to fix it?

Issue 1
You could have either a connectivity issue or a browser related issue.
Please act on all the tips here https://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/ first.
• Make sure you are running an up to date browser version found at http://browsehappy.com
• Make sure you have both JavaScript and third party cookies enabled https://en.support.wordpress.com/third-party-cookies/#how-do-i-enable-third-party-cookies.
• Disable any adblocker browser add-ons and all browser extensions and adons.
• Try clearing your browser cache https://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clearing-your-browser-cache
• Try using another browser. If you are not successful please post this specific info here:
(a) Exactly what kind of device you are using to connect to the internet and to WordPress.com.

Issue 2
I accidentally unfollowed someone that I didn’t intend to, and now it won’t let me refollow.
Go to https://wordpress.com/following/manage and enter the URL of the site you want to follow in there please.
-
Issue one: Thank you so much, clearing the cache and cookies worked!
Issue two: No change. I copied the url into the box and it says, “You’re now following Refreshing Spirit” and then it immediately follows that with, “Sorry, there was a problem following http://refreshingspirit.wordpress.com. Please try again.” One thing I noticed is, it is an HTTPS not an HTTP, but in the link I copied, it is HTTPS, so I don’t know why WordPress changed it. I’ve tried other websites just to see, and it isn’t just this one. I can’t follow anybody! This is very annoying, haha.

Hooray! That’s good news.
Issue 2
Please post the URL of the site here and note this thread is tagged for a Staff follow-up.

:D
I’m sorry – a link to the website I am trying to follow, or my website? This is the one I would like to follow: https://refreshingspirit.wordpress.com (though I can’t follow any blog I have tried thus far) and this is my WordPress blog: https://followinghimbesidestillwaters.wordpress.com
Thank you! ❤

I meant the one you were trying to follow. :) Thanks for providing it. Staff will check out what’s going on as soon as they can and respond to you here.

Hi there,
It looks like your account was mistakenly blocked by one of our checks against automated following. I’ve re-enabled follows for your account, so everything should be working again now.

@followinghimbesidestillwaters
The block you had for bulk following is an anti-spam measure. It’s spammers who follow many blogs in a short time frame that cause it to happen.
True engagement happens through submitting meaningful on topic comments to posts on sites with similar content. It does not come from adopting the ”I follow your site you follow mine” mentality.
To follow a tag use for example https://wordpress.com/tag/christianity

@kokkieh : THANK YOU! It’s working again! ❤
@timethief: This has been a problem for months, but until recently, I had dial-up Internet and was working with Windows XP, so I thought it was my end. (That old computer refused to load the Reader too, thus I couldn’t follow blogs that way.) It’s so strange how I could have triggered the anti-spam measure since I couldn’t load many blogs to follow on that old system… 😅 The only thing I did was change my settings to have blogs stop emailing me and unfollowed quite a few blogs that had been deleted.
However, I haven’t read the resources you provided and they look very interesting, so I will be sure to read them. Thank you for sharing them with me! 😊 -
As kokkieh indicated above account was mistakenly blocked by one of our checks against automated following. Whew!
re: the resources I linked to you’re welcome and best wishes. :)

Oh yes; I was just elaborating on how humorous it was that the anti-spam measure mistakenly thought that I could bulk follow when it took five minutes for me to load one blog. 😂 Boy am I glad that’s all it was. Whew! :)
Best wishes to you too! ❤

We had been making some changes to the automated checks recently, and we had a few false positives. The bug causing the false positives have been fixed already, so this shouldn’t happen again, though :)
