Reader didn't display first image
-
I’m curious how the WP Reader determines which image to display from each post. I’d assumed it showed either the first or the featured image. But today it displayed a video from my post even though the video was the third and last “image” in the post. It spoiled the effect of a headline saying “Do you recognize …” followed by a photo. Anyway, just curious how the Reader decides which image to use when there’s more than one.

Currently, when a post with the Standard, Aside, Link, Quote, or Status post format contains a video or audio embed or slideshow, that embed is pulled out and used in the Reader. Otherwise, it uses an image from the post.
If the post has the Gallery or Image post format, a video or audio embed in that post would not be used in the Reader – one or more images would be used instead.
The way our RSS feeds work is that it pulls and displays the first image it finds inside the post content. When the Reader looks for an image, it goes for the featured image first and then an image inserted into the post — if there are no images that meet the size criteria, it will display the image as a thumbnail instead of a large image.

Then it did it wrong for my post today. It was a Standard post format. The first image was also the featured image. Then there was a second image. Then the video came last. But the Reader still picked up the video. Annoying. I guess the Reader doesn’t always obey the rules.
