Reader doesn't show enough information
-
@designsimply
We just updated the summary cards to go straight to blogs from the Reader (a new change)
Are you sure about this?
It would certainly make sense but I cannot see that you have done it! -
@timethief, some of your quotes above will need to be adjusted after today’s changes. Let me double check some things before replying back with more detail!
-
@apetcher, I’m sure. :) If you can’t see updates yet, try a force refresh in your browser or try closing and re-opening it.

Okay and thanks in advance. I’m singing in a concert tonight and have to practice now so I’ll check back here tomorrow.

But now most of the summary cards don’t show pictures, which are the quickest way to grasp the subject of the post, and certainly more attention-getting than plain text.
Yes, it’s very limited, this is based on feedback from bloggers wanting to try to force those kinds of limitations. To get pictures back, bloggers can go to WP Admin > Settings > Reading and make sure the feed setting is saved as “Full text.” If you’re missing them for blogs you follow, you could try to ask the blog owner to make a change. They may switch for you! :)
still haven’t figured out how I sometimes end up looking at a list of posts from a single blog rather than everything in the reader
Clicking on the blog’s site title should do the trick for that one.

Please note my feedback which is:If the WordPress.COM Reader is being designed to drive traffic to our blog posts, then any feature in the WordPress.COM Reader that does not operate as a direct, obvious, one-click access from it to the blog post exactly where it has been published is bad design. It’s more about connecting readers and viewers with content using an additional, faster, simpler reading option. Hopefully, it will also be really helpful to people with slow internet connections too.

I personally don’t understand why we can’t have a “summary” setting AND have pictures show up in our reader. It’s important to me to be able to do both, because 1) my primary blogging platform revolves around images I post and 2) my wordpress blog page links out to my external website. You can’t see those links from the reader. I would venture to say that MOST people who are reading posts from the reader won’t bother to visit the actual blog. Now I feel like I’m being forced to choose between having people read my blog posts (because, let’s face it, images are what catch people’s eye and without them, the clicks go down), or taking the chance that people will like my headline so much that they visit my page and see all of my other content. If some people don’t want their images in the reader, fine. Give them the option of hiding images from the reader. But some of us are depending on that AND actual visits to our site.
I chose to start my blog on WordPress as opposed to my Squarespace site because of the blogging community that’s here. From my past blogs, I felt that this was the best way to interact with other bloggers and readers. But with these changes, I’m wondering if it’s worth it to keep up the two sites after all.

@khariscourtney, a visit icon link has been added today, and visit links for full post feeds now open the original post directly. Does this help with your decision?
-
It does help somewhat, because at least it’s easier to get to the site from the reader. But I also feel like the post being easier to get to won’t matter much if no one is seeing the real “attention grabber,” which is the image. Many people, myself included, would likely just keep scrolling past imageless posts. An attractive image is typically what makes people think, “Hey, I want to read that.” That’s what makes them click. Without being able to see that image, the accessibility of the post itself becomes irrelevant.

Wow! Squarespace looks awesome! A friend of a friend asked me last week if he should picked WordPress.com for his blog. I’m definitely going to recommend Squarespace instead!
designsimply, here’s an idea: Let people choose whether they want the new features. Please stop forcing terrible and ill-thought out features on us. The new reader was a terrible idea. :)

Squarespace offers site building on paid hosting http://www.squarespace.com/ Check out the pricing and details there.

this is based on feedback from bloggers
Are you having a laugh? I have been on here for 6 years and never once been asked for my opinion or to give feedback!

Every time big changes are made we are asked to provide constructive feedback so the features that are changed can be improved.

I hear you. A tradeoff was made in regards to working with feedback from blog owners who do not want their full content to show in the Reader. In order to see images from those blogs, you will now have to click through.
If you are following blogs that you wish you could use the Reader to view, you might consider politely asking the blog owner if they will change their setting for you. They may or may not take you up on the suggestion! I feel that it can’t hurt to ask if it’s content you care about and you are a dedicated reader.

What feedback. I don’t remember being consulted on this. Where can I see the results of any consultation process?
The two step clicking to get to a blog is ridiculous, no sane person would agree that it is a good idea! -

So why does WP not consult with users *before* a change is made, or when contemplating a change?
