Reader doesn't use featured image

Recently after selecting a featured image, I’ve noticed that reader chooses a completely different image for my post. When I go back in “edit” and check, I have a different image from the one showing in Reader. A friend of mine has had this exact problem, also only in the last several days.
A long standing problem is that if I embed any video it shows in Reader rather than whatever image I’ve selected, though I can sometimes get around this by re-selecting the featured image a couple more times. Because of this I am hesitant to embed videos, as I would like to feature my own content, and a video is going to be ancillary to what I am sharing. Otherwise people can go straight to YouTube.
Can we fix this problem?

As you have already noticed, we bloggers do not get to choose what displays in the Reader. The hierarchy has been established by Staff and we bloggers cannot alter it.
Currently, when a post with the Standard, Aside, Link, Quote, or Status post format contains a video or audio embed, that embed is pulled out and used in the Reader. Otherwise, it uses an image from the post.
If the post has the Gallery or Image post format, a video or audio embed in that post would not be used in the Reader – one or more images would be used instead. When the Reader looks for an image, it goes for the featured image first and then an image inserted into the post — if there are no images that meet the size criteria I mentioned above, it will display the image as a thumbnail instead of a large image. https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/pachyderm-theme-image-size-on-reader?replies=9#post-1349306
